Quick poll, with few interest -for most people -, but still ....

So there's a drum machine, and this drum machine has a sequencer.

Should the *Init Preset* (wich is loaded when the DM is 1rst launched in your daw ) have :

A blank/empty pattern ( So that you can start making your own rythms at once, but you'll hear nothing until you have populated it )
or
An already populated pattern ( So you'll hear a rythm, but you'll have to erase the sequencer lines, or load the .... init blank pattern, if you want to create your own pattern with the current -also init- drumkit )

Discuss (if you really feel inclined to ), or vote, or ... fish

The subject is by far not crucial, but well .... I'd like to know what people think about this.

Why not have this in the Options .... select [None] for a blank pattern or choose a pattern that will be loaded by default from a list ?

Post

Look at the Addictive Drums 2 GUI. Each kit page comes pre-loaded with dozens of kit mixes and ready to go patterns to show them off, all with just one click. Very well done, and always gets ideas going right away.

It's an idea. Btw : The drum machine I shall not name has already an option' define init from current settings' in .... the menu option. But well, this is for advanced users. I dont think someone demoing, or using the DM in the beginning will have the idea to look into the menu options to make such a choice.

Hmm so this for a drum machine with a finite number of kits, and options for each of these kits. And everything is organised around the drumkit right ? The Drum Machine I'm thinking of has an infinite number of drumkits/drumpads/sequences/Global presets -wich include all the above. And the init preset is a *global preset* Btw, when you load a kit, do addictive drums 2 has a sequence/rythm/midifile (pre)loaded for this drumkit, or not ?

The AD2 interface typically devotes a page to each kit type you own. Let's say, for example, you own the "metal" kit. AD2 will devote an introductory page to this kit which will contain a couple of dozen buttons with labels that say things like, "Bonzo Bonham kit" or "VH Panama," etc. If you click on those buttons, you will immediately hear a kit that sounds like, say, Bonham's kit, playing a midi loop that sounds similar to the beat in Black Dog, etc. If you don't like it, click another and you immediately get a VH kit playing a beat that sounds like it could be from Panama, etc. Now if you find a kit you like, but don't like the MIDI file that plays with it, another click takes you to a page with a complete MIDI library, and you just audition and pick out what you want.

As far as "infinite" kits, AD2 is completely editable, so, yes, it is possible to create an infinite number of variations to create as many kits as you like. I think that you have the option to make your own kits/midi the default, but I've never done that, so I'm not sure.

So, you are in the process of making the factory presets for Xils' StiX... 8)

Make an Init menu with a dozen typical genre-based presets, like for R&B, EDM, Rock, Eurotrash, classical music etc. - and one all empty init preset 8)

Thanks for the detailed answer. So its a 'kitcentric' drum sampler with specialised kits, focused on acoustic drums, and add-on libraries organised around a certain -but limited- number of 'base' natural kits, with detailed production possibilities. Interesting to see how different purposes lead to different instruments.

OXT : StiX has already a lot of presets, and you can sort them by Genre, or BPM range, or any other criterias ( Soundbank, author, etc) . (This said, it's true, the init preset will probably change ... )

Why does it have to be an either/or, have both options?

Results of the poll seem to be clear. Thanks guys for taking the time to vote.

Stephen, tss tss dont make it more complicated than it already is please :bang: :hihi:

( well you can have as many init presets as you want actually in a synth, but if there are too many, they are just presets like the other presets, and anyway, the DM needs to load one and only one when it is first launched )

2 isn't complicated, and a launch preset isn't necessarily an init preset anyway. You can only have one launch preset but 2 variants of an init, without without patterns, is hardly rocket science.
