The audience connects to guitars, or keys, the voice, the expression, the lyrics, textures...
Last thing on their mind is whether the production is digital, went tape or is through an emulation.
Yeah, it all contributes on a subconscious level, but no one is going to not buy a song because it didn't go through tape or an emulation. Just like no one is not going to buy a song because it only has 3 guitars instead of 4.
Tape does bring a certain sound or texture to the foray, but people don't connect to the actual tape itself, just the texture it brings.
However, they are still just as likely to connect to a similar style of texture that connects to the same emotions. It doesn't have to be exact to achieve the desired emotional connection.
Just like there is more than one way to color grade a movie. There is also more than one way to color grade to achieve a certain mood or vibe.
Essentially, there is more than one way to achieve a desired effect. It's the result that matters, not the methods.

It might have sounded like I was disagreeing with this, I'm not, I agree. My point was that realism isn't for the audience it's for the producer that needs to convey something to the audience. The audience cares about the quality of what's conveyed on some level.simon.a.billington wrote:The audience connects to guitars, or keys, the voice, the expression, the lyrics, textures...

Right, but, if the producer can't convey that because he can't leverage his experience with tape, then that may get lost. However, they are still just as likely to connect to a similar style of texture that connects to the same emotions. My point was that realism isn't for the audience, it's for the producer. The audience cares about the overall quality/texture and the producer might rely on realism in order to be able to convey that.

Although i would consider that producer to be quite limited if he can't find alternative methods of expressing the same thing. But, hey, that's just me and it still doesn't detract from the core point you are making.

That depends, if a producer is using some skill developed over years of practice with some hardware, then it doesn't mean that he's not skilled because he can't use an unrealistic emulation. It might simply be not worth the effort, particularly if there's a more realistic alternative.simon.a.billington wrote: Although i would consider that producer to be quite limited if he can't find alternative methods of expressing the same thing. I don't want to get bogged down in this, I can just see the value of realism in emulations to someone who has developed skill on the object being emulated and I think that it's too strong to say that realism is unimportant.
Certainly, I can't say much with respect to tape machines. I've not used anything more than a 1/2" sixteen track and most of my experience is with much smaller machines than that. So in that sense, I'm not that producer, i.e., realism isn't important to me there.

Again a good point. So perhaps I will correct myself in saying absolute realism of a plugin is seldom an issue in mixing.ghettosynth wrote:That depends, if a producer is using some skill developed over years of practice with some hardware, then it doesn't mean that he's not skilled because he can't use an unrealistic emulation. Since this is the first time in my 25 years or so that I heard it could be a particular obsticle, then I feel safe in using the word "seldom".

Sorry to bother, but I cannot activate Bus Driver. I downloaded it during the time when it was still free, but never activated it. Now, I try to activate it using the serial number that came with the registration e-mail back then. But it doesn't work.

If left next a strong electromagnetic field it's possible the tape could have become demagnetised which maybe the cause of some issues for you....
Sorry, I couldn't resist... Hahaha
Okay, so what exactly is the problem?? Have you tried using the Authorisation app that comes with the installer??
