Without going out of my way to look it up, I'm guessing that it predates Planet Perfecto's "Bullet in a Gun", back in the days when effects were still outboard and not pushed to their limits. Nothing wrong with being dated, as it certainly sounds good to me.
It's indeed an older one. But the period of "Bullet in the gun", i.e. around 2000 was still ok. The high-frequency super-saw mess was getting more and more pronounced by then, but it was still mostly used effectively. In the years after that, super-saw was almost all you heard, and production in general just stagnated and started to become a parody of itself.

That's how I see trance now: a parody of its earlier self.

To me, 2000 was the end of trance.

"Trance Nation 4" mixed by Ferry Costen marks the end for me.
From then on House took over what creativity is concerned.

Things like the below just don't have any equivalents in today's trance

IMO this kind of trance is dead... boring and copy & paste music.
applies equally well to

The subgenres of psy trance have been laughably formulaic for a decade now.
With some Psytrance artists I can hear a signature sound and a own style which makes a difference between this artists. For instance, Shpongle sounds completely different than Astrix.
There is also often a difference in the production techniques, you really hear the difference.

With this Anjunabeat stuff, many tracks sounding so similar that you will often have a problem to get an idea of the artists. There is often no signature sound or a own style, they sharing the same Sylenth/Virus/Massive pluck sounds, they having the same uprisers etc. Sometimes it sounds if they used the same project files.
Not to mention that often the productions having only a mediocre quality and it sounds a lot like "plugin trance".

I think, this music is much closer to the original idea behind trance, and these tracks are fairly new.
Anything moving away from that cliché trance formula is a good move.

But none of those tracks go anywhere what I'm concerned. They hardly have any melody progressions at all, no hooks, it just moves along as a sort of demo of someone's synth collection and a presentation of collected production tricks.

From the more current trance, Moogwai is still acceptable.

One of their older ones:

..which then got raped by Van Buuren:

This one is an original mix and decent trance:

Shahar makes good stuff (Static Movement)... I like the Israeli trance artist a lot, they making really good stuff. Progressive trance is also very nice and very interesting genre but it leaves also some space for new artists with new ideas.

If you want 'hands in the air' modern trance, at least do it right then..

Sorry, mate, did you actually listened to any of these tracks from start to finish? I've picked them up because they all have memorable melodies and chord progressions (maybe except for the last one, it relies more on deep atmospheres but still is very melodious at times).

They start with beat and effects because they are supposed to be dj friendly but progress to a real melodic climax
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

I have to admit, I was a bit harsh. There are melodies, just not always particularly exciting ones, in my opinion.

The third track is the best for me. The energy makes up for a lot and it reminds me of some older stuff in that genre, some acts of which were among my favourite trance in those days, but I lost the CDs and can't remember their names any more. I started a thread here a while back to try and find it, but I had no luck.

What about this one? You may skip to 5:45 where the melodic climax is, but imo the whole track is well worth a listen because it has really captivating progression

That's not bad either, but I don't actually consider that trance any more.
It's a shame Psy-trance has that word in it. They should have just called it Psy.

Nice thread. It's nice to see a civil discussion on the issue as well. If you don't like something, you don't like it. I honestly don't understand the confusion as though some people expect that all people will/should like the same thing.

Anyway If I can think of anything else I'll post.

Haven't listened to much of it but most of what I have heard sounds quite a bit different from this, apart from the tempo. And I like all of these tracks, and think they're better than what little psy/trance I have heard.

I read your post this morning and didn't get a chance to listen to the tracks until about 12 hours later, so I'd forgotten what you'd written. And all the way through listening, I was thinking, "Wow! This is more like how trance used to be originally!" :)

:D This is like slowed-down Eurotrance. It's OK, I suppose, but not my cup of coffee.
