Just a bit of a conversation starter.

Last night I watched a movie called Vanilla Sky, the movie wasn't great, but it had heaps of good songs in it, I think Nancy Wilson was heavily featured.

Another one that springs to mind is the Drive soundtrack, it's filled with cool electro pop, it's also one of my favorite movies.

So what's your favorite movie soundtrack? I'm not talking about scores either, more "what's the best collection of existing songs that have been inserted into a movie"... or something :P

Nancy Wilson was featured because the movie's director (Cameron Crowe) is her husband. He's also a huge fan of Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds album.

Cliff Martinez did the score to Solaris. Its an odd movie re-make, very existential (and a bit slow in places), but the only (mostly synth) movie soundtrack I can remember where I thought, wow, this music is really nice!

Among many many other favorites, I can't choose one particular.
This rates high though:

West Side Story
Get Carter
Dirty Harry

The movie Vanilla Sky (mentioned in the OP) is a remake of "Abres Los Ojos" which is a much better film imho.

One of them...
"More"
Never seen it, don't think anyone else has, either! But good music by a then little known band: Pink something or other.

Another...
Scott of the Antarctic, music by Vaughan Williams, which he reworked into his 7th symphony.

Post

One more...
I think it was called "Wonderwall" - not Oasis, but George Harrison.

I agree.

Easy. The Wedding Singer.

Actually most of Adam Sandler's movies have the same type of 80's pop soundtrack, but the Wedding Singer in particular had music cues that were actually timed to make you laugh, or at the least, smile. Is it even possible to watch a movie and then keep a straight face while "Pass the Dutchie" hits your ears during a scene transition?

And it was just icing on the cake to have Billy Idol play himself (and sing)...

Cheers

While I'm at it, on the more serious side, I must say that Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill mentioned above) always seems to take a particular interest in his soundtracks. He always manages to feature some amazing music in a completely organic way that never sounds forced or fake (except for that weird vampire movie early on).

My favorite is the way he featured the Delfonics in Jackie Brown so it was actually a part of the male lead's character.
