Hello everyone!
I've just finished the user guide in English for Tyrell N6. I hope that somebody will find it useful.

So I don't get into future trouble, what is considered a cover in the scope of this contest?
How far from the original does an entry need to be?
Here are some examples of what I am getting at and how I might judge them.
Gary Jules "Mad World" vs Tears for Fears "Mad World" I would say would qualify as a cover although they are different arrangements.
Tomita vs Holst or Mussorgsky though....it does not seem as clear to me. Especially since the Mussorgsky was originally just for piano and each performance their work is a unique interpretation of an original score, not an original recording.
Or consider John Adam's "Christian Zeal and Activity". Yeah it basically rips off Sullivan's melody, but I don't think I would call it a cover. But that is why I am asking.
And in a similar vein is taking phrases of another work forbidden?
Like say Vanilla Ice had played that bassline with a tuba sound instead of a bass guitar sound, would have it been less of a theft from Queen?
What has me thinking about this is a potential tune idea of taking common phrases from say Christmas songs and making a melody of them in December. Though I can see how 30+ entries with the same idea might get a tad boring for the judging phase.

How far from the original? Very close, like fairly obvious. If you threw in a 2 minute section of Jingle bells for your epic trance build up for exampleFrostline wrote:So I don't get into future trouble, what is considered a cover in the scope of this contest?

Taking phrases of another work? Use your best judgement.
You have some good questions. Were you thinking of doing something similar to another song?

What about HY-Mono? It's just a mono synth but it's called a challenge anyway, isn't it?
http://hyakken.moo.jp/WordPress/product/hy-mono/
You could even consider a HY-Challenge where you are only allowed to use the synth and all of the HY effects:
http://hyakken.moo.jp/WordPress/plugins/vst/
To make sure the mixes work one should also allow mixing related plug ins like EQ, compressors, etc. provided by the DAW in that case.
This could make for a quite level playing field.
