Or perhaps a fixed reed.

Depends on the genre, but either acoustic drums or a digital drum synth.
My solo projects:
Hekkräiser (experimental) | MFG38 (electronic/soundtrack) | The Santtu Pesonen Project (metal/prog)

No option for analog or multisynthesis drum machines ?
Anyway I choose other, wich could mean 'all of the above' + everything that have been omitted in the above.

Of course my option is missing : Samples!
All my drums are samples. I always start with standard 808/909 pattern, then add more loops for interest. The bets results I got is to slice existing loop into pieces (Ableton has huge possibilities here), then replace the slices with something different - other drum samples, or totally weird samples such as metal objects.
I also try to use real-world sampled drums - tribal or cinematic toms. I hope to learn finger drumming.

Just to add, I play not program my drums. (I just can't get a decent sounding drum line when I program them.) And hi-hats are very, very important.
