Thanks all for the great recommendations I'll check some of these out.

You can try granular synths.

Cheapest but very good plugin, The Mangle http://sound-guru.com/software/mangle/

More expensive :
Padshop Pro http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/vs ... p_pro.html
Iris 2 https://www.izotope.com/en/products/cre ... /iris.html

Wow, based on listening to the demos, I would be willing to part with $50 bucks for this one. It has just the vibe I was looking for. Downloading the (1GB!) demo as I type this.
I was really looking for something with lots of presets to get me started quickly, but still having the ability to tweak parameters, and this seems to fit the bill.

I've downloaded some of the 99sounds libraries already... great stuff! These are pretty easy to use within Reaper within the Media Explorer.

These are wonderful. But not quite ready yet to plunk down $199 for Zebra2. I see that you can get ZebraCM with an issue of Computer Music Mag... will these presetes work in ZebraCM? I've downloaded Zebralette, but haven't played with it much yet.

Great for spacey sounds and currently on sale I believe: Wusikstation.

I'm also demoing it. Very nice indeed as it has different layers and zones. Not as flexible as a synth but there are some parameters to change the sound. The positive thing is it's very fast to come with something creepy or dark! But unless you have the USB dongle, you are permitted to install it in one machine only.

You can also look into 2nd hand market here "Sell & Buy" forum. You might find Absynth for not so much than $70.

Nope, ZebraCM is a very different synth, it's a fairly normal VA synth design without the powerful Zebra2 oscillators and not modular, it can just select from a small set of waves like a normal subtractive synth.

Zebralette is basically one Zebra2 oscillator wrapped with all the other necessary modules to make sounds. It has no filter, you synthesise sounds by scanning the wavetables and modulating the numerous spectral FX. It's quite unique, has a learning curve, looks a bit crude but is imho one of very best free synths, especially suitable for pad sounds. It has a distinctly digital sound, which is desirable for spacey pads. It uses almost no CPU, which makes it great for layering- here's some 5-minute fiddling using presets.

2xZebralettes thru a convolution reverb.

No investment, practically no skill required!

A quick follow-up: On a whim, I sprung the $75 for the Air AIEP3 complete upgrade via pluginboutique, which I was eligible for because I had previously picked up the $1 version of Xpand!2. Xpand!2 is not bad on its own, but so far I am really impressed with Hybrid 3 so far. Between Xpand2, Hybrid3 and Zebralette, I think I am covered for my "spacey" sound needs for the time being for a modest $76 investment.
I haven't even had time (nor space on my hdd) to play with the rest of the included stuff in the bundle. Really curious to try out Structure 2, as I hear it can load Kontakt .nki instruments, which I've downloaded a bunch of freebies but so far have been limited to using them with the 15-minute limited player.
Loom and Vacuum Pro look neat, but I have no idea how I would use The Riser and/or Transfuser.
Anyway: I am pleased with the purchase of this bundle thusfar, and look forward to trying out more.
I still dig Dark Planet the most, and will probably be buying that too once the demo runs out.

This is a very good choice :tu: the synths are of good quality. Hybrid 3 has already very nice calm and dreamy pads while Loom can make wonderful morphing sounds. I also like Vacuum Pro analogish character, it's different from other analogs (moog, Roland, ...etc). Transfuser can make wonderful beats, overall it is unbelievable value for money :)

I have two plugins that contain atmospheric spacey sounds and that are easy to use. You don't need Kontakt to use them as they are sample based VST/AU plugin instruments. The first one is Nostromos:

The other one is Cinematika:

out.
Definitely get into some of the pads on vacuum then. Especially turn down the slope on the filters to get sounds that are less restrained but still have motion. Turn up the various saturation controls to get heavier pads. Feed through lots of reverb. Also, don't ignore several of the fx plugins that came with that bundle. The diffusion delay and the pitch shifter are useful for sound mangling.

Loom also has a lot of interesting sounds. Try putting the AIR filter or pumper after the synth in the chain to tone down the highs a bit.
