It's almost always cheaper to leverage the grace period than wait for the update to come out. I'm on 7.5, I'm staying there until 9 comes out. So, you can think of it this way, I didn't just buy an 8.5 upgrade, I just purchased a 9 upgrade at a discount. Now, there's some chance it will backfire. My 7.5 upgrade from 5 was cheaper than if I had purchased prior to release owing to a sale. So, I may get bit again, you win some, you lose some.

"Some times the bull wins".
Punch line to a joke.

Yeah, their updates are really pricey.

I'm looking forward to seeing what major changes have made it into this release. Time will tell :D

Yeah, their updates are really pricey.
But is it so bad?

Isn't it about 25-30% of new price for major updates, and about 10% for dot 5 releases.

About the same all over software market, I think. Adobe still have some products that are not subscription model, and they are 80% of new price to upgrade - they want to push everybody to subscription. Look at Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements costs.

I'd rather pay when it's something new I want than be on subscription. So as long as Steinberg does not go subscription, I will upgrade when something new I want - giving Steinberg a hint I liked what they did. And when they don't get updates as expected they know they did not make enough effort and probably improve - not to go out of business.

I have Cubase Artist 8.5. This was a grace period update from Cubase 8. I am planning to buy an upgrade to Cubase Pro 8.5, and my question is will I get a grace period update to Cubase Pro 9, assuming it falls within the deadline.
It doesn't matter if you already had a grace period upgrade in the past. Just make sure to purchase the upgrade Cubase Pro 8.5 from Cubase Artist 8.5. If you activate it within the grace period deadline you should get an upgrade to Cubase Pro 9 once it is released.

Thanks for confirming.

8.5 pro is really complete , I am very curious to know the new feature.
The only things I could wish are better midi plugin and a 'light' interface (I m back after S1V3 fail on Mac)

Yes, it's not the same across the industry. Cubase updates come out much more frequently than other vendors and the Cubase updates tend to not be as compelling either.

They should be giving their point upgrades away.

Is there an official release date at this point?

I ask because chances are that you can (and will) buy the upgrade on the last day, but won't be getting the license key until after C9 was released. According to the rules, the "grace period" is then over. And honestly, the rules shift constantly.

Additional to that, is the grace period still 6 weeks? What if you buy the upgrade now, and the release drops end of January and Guitar Center was just plain wrong? Because apparently, only "they" know that it's coming - yet the biggest German distributors do not.

I do like a good game of risk, but I just want to rule out any possible setbacks if somebody activates the license AFTER the new version was released.

Also - does the current Dorico release cycle mean, that we will get demos within 1 month at this point? That would be a HUGE improvement.

That's why it's so counter productive to hold back on release date?
Everybody hold back on purchase this time of year until knowing.

I would not be overly suprised if the held back on V9 until new video engine is ready and tested, as stated eof feb or so.

Speaking against that would be that it's christmas and we all want a present for ourselves, which Steinberg probably noticed over the years.

I would hold back on that Buy-button....

Last Cubase update is dated April 2016 build. Who is slower than that?

From Cubase 7 forward, it has been released early December. And I think that works. The expectation is big on this release, though, so I really can't say.

Because of all of this conversation, I went back and found some interesting things. For some reason, I had Halion Sonic AFTER v2 had been released. I got the V2 upgrade free. The same goes with Cubase 7. I actually activated it a few days after 7.5 had been released. And I got 7.5 upgrade free.

I had sold my 5.1 but was completely unhappy with anything else and went back. (Funny, I never tried 6 at all.)

I can see the idea of saving a little money here and there and being comfortable with a stable release. That is what sales and demos are for. But otherwise I think this "miser" mentality is backwards thinking and a bit extreme...even if you are not making money with your music. Watching dates and timings can be very anti-creative.

Now I'm confused.

Am I eligible for Cubase Pro 9 if I activate an UPGRADE from Cubase Artist 8.5 to Cubase Pro 8.5 AFTER the release of Cubase 9?
