me again. Windows 7 64bit, Cubase 8.5 64bit.
keep getting crashes on opening projects.
advice here was to find the plugin culprit. Went through that. Found that a plugin I had for ages was causing the problem. Removed the .dll from the VST folder. Project opens ok now.
tried to open another project - it crashes every time.
I've had the issue sent to Steinberg with the crash dumps on 4th Jan. Still no reply even though I replied on a "sorry we are really busy" email I got about a week ago. Is it usual to wait this long for a reply?
Any ideas what my next move might be - in simple terms please - I'm not very technical.

try to start as admin and open faulty project, also start normal too and open faulty project; try different project safefiles; update windows, update gpu drivers, try to clean registry from errors ,activate windows 7 aero for cubase 8.5... if you use any hardware in this project turn on all the hardware first before opening the project...

What plug-ins are you using in this project? Do you remember? It seems like you updated something that is messing with the plug-ins. Almost for certain it's (again) a plug-in issue.

ok, that was interesting - I ran Cubase in admin mode and it didn't crash.
As I'm not technical I'm not sure what that tells us - obviously I can continue to run in admin mode - but I'm still wondering why this has suddenly happened

Move your plugin folder so that Cubase doesn't see it (i.e. rename it or something). If that doesn't help, trash your appdata prefs for Cubase 8.5 (you know the roaming thingy). Cubase will recreate it and simulate it from scratch. Backup your configs before you trash them.
If these two don't work there's something wrong with your system (RAM, etc). Highly doubt it. My Cubase BSODs were caused by faulty RAM which when removed made the issues go away.

Sam, I went through the hiding stuff (unfortunately I have a number of VST folders now) to find the Satin issue and it seems odd that it's suddenly 2 plugins that have gone bad...
re the appdata prefs - do you mean remove the user pref file or everything under apps data>roaming>steinberg>cubase 8.5?

Don't do that. It will most likely not solve anything, and maybe even cause more troubles. Try again seeking what plug-in is now causing the crash. I noticed that you mwntioned "I have a number of VST folders now". Which VST folders do you have, and why?ChamomileShark wrote:Sam, I went through the hiding stuff (unfortunately I have a number of VST folders now) to find the Satin issue and it seems odd that it's suddenly 2 plugins that have gone bad...

too many, they are a result of not really knowing what I'm doing and allowing too many programmes to put the .dll where they thought they should go.
however, I've not made any changes recently which is odd.
I just changed the screen saver and can open the project again.
It all seems very random

Maybe it's time to do some cleanup. Where is your main VST folder? Mine is in Progrm Files/Common Files/VST2 (in Windows 10) and in Program Files\VstPlugIns in Windows 7, and I don't have problems.ChamomileShark wrote:too many, they are a result of not really knowing what I'm doing and allowing too many programmes to put the .dll where they thought they should go.

However, some plug-ins may want to access files in the VstPlugIns folder (badly written plug-ins) and those folders are protected, and require Admin privileges (all folders inside Program Files require Admin privileges to be writable). That's why some people place the VstPlug Ins folder in Users/Public/VstPlugins.
Anyway, what you should do is UNINSTALL all the plug-ins that are spreaded all over, and reinstall them in the main location.
EDIT: Deactivate the screen-saver. It really is useless nowadays and is wasting CPU cycles for nothing.

Why not use what is there in 8.5 - import tracks from other project?
Create a blank project, and import first one track from other project, then another and so on...
It does not do routings though, but just helping in narrowing down where issue is - if a certain track or not.
Or if something is corrupt in original project, you can get started new and fresh.
Running as admin - I know that jBridge wants admin authorities, if using 32-bit stuff.
I would eliminate any such use of 32-bit.
If having warning from UAC turned off - you might not even know about it since confirm dialog does not come up then - if really needing to use it.
I've had issues with screensaver and power off of monitor in windows 7, and turn that off completely since years back. A couple a daws just idling and coming back to computer suddenly had crashed. This was with two different daws, so a windows matter as I see it. Screensaver was more in the CRT monitor days, and burning in patterns from screen that needed screensavers. If leaving computer for longer time just turn off monitor power manually instead, but I don't bother at all with LCD monitors.
