Found a pretty good version of Barber's masterpiece - his song suite 'Hermit Songs op.29.' This is a really hard piece to find decent versions of, the singing and piano is subtle and complex and difficult to get right - it changes mood and pace radically between and even within pieces, and the music cleverly dances a fine line between tonality, atonality and even jazz elements

Highlights

7.18 The Crucifixion - brings tears to my eyes

11.24 The Monk and his cat - wonderful piano work, playful singing

15.25 The desire for hermitage - bloody brilliant!!

My 3 favourite versions of Summertime

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBnIJH-Py5g

Jeanne Lee is one of my alltime favourite jazz vocalists - silky sexy smoky voice

This is my favourite of the more trad versions by far - Louis and Ella - unbeatable

But I also love Janis Joplin's riproaring rock version with that mindblowing guitar work

On the subject of the great Jeanne Lee - 2 more from her

could this possibly be classed as one of the first rap pieces? Whatever it is (spoken word poetry I suppose) it is powerful and angry but also tender and sensual - one of the best pieces of music I have heard imho

whoever made the video f**ked up the lyric a bit though

^I really like her There is a Balm in Gilead with Archie Shepp. And she's remarkable on Town Hall (Trio & Quintet) 1972 by Anthony Braxton. I'm generally not big on jazz vocals, but she's good.

She provided vocals on many great albums including Marion Brown's masterpiece "Afternoon of a Georgia Faun"
