My favourite record of last year: Peder Mannerfelt's The Swedish Congo Record. An absolutely fascinating beast. It's a 1-to-1, sample-free recreation of The Belgian Congo Records, a set of colonial era field recordings from the then Belgian-Congo (now DR Congo). It completely flips the colonial overtones of the original record inside out. While lesser artists may have mined the record for samples (much as Belgium mined the Congo for resources), Mannerfelt instead sensitively recreates the record in his own image. A respectful cover record, not a sample ripping smash-and-grab. Outstanding work.

Soriah (with Ashkelon Sain): enrapturing, neo-ancient, mystically ethereal; hypnotic tribal rhythms meld organic darkwave textures with Central Asian instruments and Tuvan overtone singing.

Mercury's Antennae "A Waking Ghost Inside" is Valentine's Day-only name-your-price download

Ethereal, hypnotic, dizzying, gripping, lush, oceanic, driving, cinematic, haunting... good words to describe the ethereal-darkwave-shoegaze of Mercury’s Antennae.

Bob Ostertag Plays The Aalto: https://bobostertag.bandcamp.com/album/ ... -the-aalto

Does what it says on the tin. Great to hear a composer of Ostertag's stature dedicate a record solely to one well known software synthesiser. As an owner of the full synth (I imagine many people will own it in some form thanks to Aalto CM/Solo) it's wonderful to see an old-school modular head like Ostertag praise it so highly and make such enthrallingly bonkers sound with it.
...
Thus encountering Randy Jones' Aalto software synthesizer was a joy. No, it doesn't have knobs, but: (1) it gives me a fixed world of tools, that are (2) sufficiently complex to facilitate the approach to music I am talking about; (3) it makes interesting noise from the moment I sit down until the moment I get up, and (4) cannot be upgraded or expanded. Everything I liked about the old synthesizers is here. And I can specify precise ratios in an extremely intuitive way, and easily recall machine states. Working with Aalto I realize the inability of the old instruments to recall machine states was an even bigger obstacle than I had thought, because you simply cannot begin to master the complexities of a given state in one sitting, or even two or three.

I can now at long last work in the way the old synthesizers promised but never quite delivered. I consider this release as a collaboration with Randy Jones.
