Ok, a dumb "what's the connection" round to move things along:
Magnetic Fields
My Morning Jacket
Jethro Tull
INXS
auto erotic asphyxiation?
or some sort of sexual deviance in general?

Educated guessing:
So, MDs hey day was late 90s and, like all this technology, tends to get adopted first by those with disposable income or gadget heads who , with duest respect, seem to have conservative music tastes so... maybe the old standbys of Sgt Pepper or Dark Side of the Moon?
Not sure what Micahel Jackson was up to late 90s but maybe him. Or Madonna? I doubt anything too radical like Nirvana. Thinking of the time frame, Titanic was massive so maybe Celine Dion or the OST..?
It's probably going to be some almost forgotten artist that was hugely popular briefly.
Only pre-recorded MD I was even slightly tempted to buy was Massive Attacks Mezzanine and I think that really just for novelty value...
