I'd grown tired of music and started drawing..
and I discovered the wonder of shading!
it had the potential to turn any stupid banal doodling into an oeuvre d'art...
which realisation made me come back to music again
What do you think is to music production what shading is to drawing?
(of course its arrangement, orchestration, mixing, mastering etc
but which element of it seems to be the most important to you?
EQ? pan? compression? etc)

Well shading turns 2D into 3D so reverb or directional EQ or surround, but if I had to pick one: surround!

Shading is to drawing what "music production" is to music.
I am viewing "music production" as the act of taking a bunch of outlines (or ideas) and putting them together within the context of a complete piece - much like the composition of a picture is more than a few isolated doodles (or noodles in musical parlance).
And of course, sometimes just the outline is enough.

Dynamics... which is just gain control Making a shade darker or brighter is equivalent of making a sound quiter or louder.

Well, since I can't draw to save my life, I guess shading is to drawing as polishing turds is to music production AFAIC.

I say automation. Without it, like shading, the end product can end up 'flat'.

I'd say shading in drawing is necessary to give depth to a picture. It helps our eye identify the foreground as well as background elements. For me shading would be those kinds of sounds that don't seem to add much to a mix but when removed make the whole thing feel empty. Think pads, backing vocals, short riffs, quiet drones, and maybe even cowbell.
