Are you a musician?

Well, I play bass, keys, some guitar, played trumpet through high school, have a degree in theory/composition, used to play and sing in many bands along with some session work. But, now I just make electronic music in my home studio, so I guess I *used to be* a musician?

Right?!? Now who's going to loan me that mic, BTW, it should probably come with a splash guard, um, I mean pop filter, yeah, it should come with a "pop" filter.pekbro wrote:Definitely the makings of a signature pieceghettosynth wrote:[
Well, of course you are right. My farts are also musical. In fact, they are pleasant in multiple dimensions. They are certainly complex, evolving, and dare I say, magnificent?
I would be delighted to prove this by rendering a piece that was composed entirely from my farts. Could someone loan me a microphone?

Certainly, such a project, would be an "odor" of magnitude beyondghettosynth wrote:

I have no formal training on any instruments (mostly because i cannot learn notation and no teachers wanted to teach me without notation). I'm most comfortable with keys, but I'm not a "player". I cannot perform with anything but my voice, and I've only done that once for an audition (went well, other than my writing not being a fit for the band). I will try to play any instrument i can get my hands on and i would love to own many more than i currently have. I make music using them, but i wouldn't ever say i can play them.
But i do make actual music. From scratch, even. Sometimes with actual physical instruments that aren't keys.
For whatever this means to your inquiry of "are you a musician"...

As a consumer, I am coming from a dual background. Acid house, electronic, IDM, that route on the one side and on the other classical music... eg. Shostakovich as my favourite composer. There's a lot of parallels in music styles.
I write at good-music-guide.com forum as well as on WATMM.
I learned and still learn an instrument since 6 years. The clarinet. Because I wanted to know an instrument, learn to read/write sheet music, think like a musician, know what a dotted note is, circle of fifths,,, such things.
And: The clarinet is a finicky monster at times.
I really wish to learn piano playing as it helps in DAW sessions, I don't like piano roll composing atm, because often it leads me to more unpredictable and random results. But I want to get MY IDEAS straight into the DAW.

specialisation is for those in sects :p still propogating my interpretation of macross zero as you can estimate the decline of a civilisation by the amount of people stationed as "memetic production". steering this culture straight to hell but the blinders are really comfortable and expertly crafted eh kids.
