I've been listening to Motown singles in glorious mono (as it was intended)

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

So I got a little curious about how they did those 3-minute symphonies with so little tech and I found this:

"The Lost Step in the Recording Process"

It's all about how recording engineers handled the bouncing of tracks on a 3-track Ampex tape recorder by "premastering" tracks. The Motown "system".

They did so much with so little. This is a great (short) article and may be of interest.

"Any staff engineer would record a basic session on three tracks. The engineer was strictly forbidden from using any eq, compression or any other type of signal processing." Words for me to live by.

I love old Mowtown too, thanks for sharing the link!
