Hive 2

Then I wanted to recreate those presets in Omnisphere 2 since I’d prefer if I could just do it all in Omnisphere. But I cannot get the same results. Sometimes it’s close but it’s not the same (at all). I find that Omnisphere often sounds quite hard and a bit cold (did try with big unison and detune).

With Hive I get these crispy attack textures and the synth sounds more “soft” i.e. not so hard. I think the synth has character and it just sounds better to me.
Your language is not particularly useful in helping you with recommendations.
Take any two synths with some differences and you're going to find this to be true. If you use that to justify purchases then you're credit card is always going to be out.

Of course for any specific sound of any complexity it's not going to be "the same." That doesn't mean that the synths don't have features that cover a similar sonic territory. It also doesn't mean that some other synth will do the job as well as Hive, or whatever synth you're currently interested in. Any recommendation is statistical in nature. It means that the balance of similarities outweigh the differences. One can only make recommendations based on what people SAY that they are interested in. I'm not familiar with too much IDM or ambient that makes extensive use of unison type sounds.

So, based on your own language, that you were interested in IDM and ambient, among others, and that you already had Omnisphere but also Diva, it is a reasonable conclusion that Hive will not cover sonic territory that is significantly different or useful to you.

I don't think that was ever the main point of Hive. Arguably the point of Hive was Urs having a bone to pick with commercial dance music and its lack of interest in his plugins

I've said it before and I'll say it again, for Hive to stand out more from Sylenth, Spire and Serum, it needs to find and amplify its unique character. Think about how Roland accidentally changed the sound of dance music, just by making their machines capable of making interesting sounds that caught the ear. Urs actually touched on a similar kind of unexpected magic quite recently with the Jaws module. I'm still convinced there's a relatively minor tweak to the oscillators in Hive, that would make people go "oh!".
I'll accept it, but anyway you want to put it Hive took a 180 from the rest of the U-he catalog. Everything else is about extreme engineering...Hive is about extreme design, and they did succeed at that point. I'm pretty sure Hive is the first one to use this dual engine on a single page design. I think ArcSyn came out shortly after if I remember right. It's an ingenious design, it really is. It's ground breaking. There will be imitators.

Then they threw that 1999 blue on it all like an after thought. There are so many shades and tones of blue and they just blanketed it all in buggy blue. The best skin to date is still the DnB skin. it's the easiest on the eyes and the classiest. The gun metal grey really works with Hive well. i want more beauty. I want variations on violets, pinks, and a whiter more lightening color blue.

Another spontaneous hand played pad... MC Imagine

Hehe, yeah, thanks. I recall at least one example where Hive's design has been taken over almost pixel by pixel.

We took so much clutter away and still added so many more possibilities. But then, the synths that sell in that particular market segment are the synths that don't have Velocity assigned in their factory presets. It's a concession to mediocrity that we will never make.

Yes, we have admitted several times that the skin itself was a mistake. New designs are being drafted and evaluated, even external designers are being put on the task. I think it doesn't require too much of a change, just a bit more sensible use of space and shades. But like Bazille we're also thinking about completely opposing layouts.

Elegant is the word Urs. It's an elegant design. I only want the color layout to be as elegant. But I'm excited to see what you have in the works because I know you can do better. The GUI just comes across as something that was half finished because you guys were exhausted from late night development at the time. I'm at the pub with my daughter currently... I'm going to have to leave you for now. Cheers.

Do you like Toxic Biohazard?

I'm telling you, there's some straight B synth-porn starring those two somewhere.

I've never actually checked it out. Not sure why. Is it a synth?

It's a synth, and a finned alien phallus. I have to tell you that so that you will never be able to unsee it.

It sounds alright, hate the U/I though. I'll never part with money for that U/I. That said, it's an FM/subtractive synth. Yet another example of improving FM with subtractive features.

Before I check it out, 32 or 64 bit?

I have no idea, it's Image-Line, maybe one of their customers can chime in. I don't have any synths by them unless you count AutoGun, and I don't think that I have that installed right now anyway.

Just watched the video.

Now THAT is a synth with character. For $99? A no brainer. That is SO 80s. The library I could make with that? Have no clue how well it would do but it would be fun as hell to put together. My Harmor library, forget it. Didn't do well at all. But Harmor is a weird beast. I think the complexity puts a lot of people off. Of course the GUI of this thing could definitely put a lot of people off too.

I want to get Sytrus but I'm waiting for a sale. $199 is a little more than I want to pay for that thing.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this. It is 64 bit so I'm sure I'll be picking this up sometime in July. I have everything set through August releases to I'm good until September kicks in. July will give me plenty of time to come up with something decent.

Thanks a lot.
Glad you enjoyed them.
I'm just finishing up my new Hive soundset now.
I've had a year to learn more about it, so these new sounds are an improvement imo.

Here's a few of my new Hive sounds.

Gearporn is a perfect skin, because it has everything on only one page and is looking very good.
