Audacity is free, and it's noise reduction lets you sample a track's noisy part,
test various removal settings, and apply your result to the whole
track, or a part of it. Then put the mow purfict track back in your project.
Beyond that, noisegates are useful in some setups, usually where a high-gain
amp-sim choice is swinging a mace. Amplification that occurs before the noise,
(and the system noise floor) makes harder work to get everything else to sound
as noise-free as desired. Not saying it's a crime to enjoy a noisy amp on a friday night...
Filters can also be employed to tame things a bit, if some noise sits
in a certain frequency that isn't crucial to the the core of the music.
Cheers

Reaplugs ReaFIR is the only freeware tool that does Noise Reduction sufficiently. It can also do much more.

Yeah, I don't trust CNET as they call every demo a free vst. Not the same thing.

I ended here searching an alternative to ReaFir because sometimes introduces some distortion making things worse, not always but wanted something for those cases.
Found 2 more with KVR's search: Free De-noising plugins win64
