My old PC had the software iLok with one VST activated, but the PC wouldn't boot and was scrapped.

My new PC's software iLok tells me I can't have the activations back from that old PC unless I run the software iLok on the old PC, but I don't have the PC any more. Is there a way to get this activation back?

Post

I think your only option is to contact the plugin manufacturer, tell them the story and ask them to reset your activation. Pace won't do anything.

Thank you.

Two more questions on this...

If I have to reformat my hard drive, I have to move the licences first by deactivating?

So I'm guessing that to be safe from a failing hard disk you need to buy a USB iLok to hold the licences rather than the software iLok?

Post

yes and yes. although USB iLok comes with its own set of problems.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

I'm not sure if you need to deactivate for a reformat. Maybe someone else can clarify that. It only takes a minute so it might be worth doing it anyway for the sake of safety. Obviously you do need to do it ahead of changing computers/motherboards.

I started out with soft iLok and later got a hardware iLok key. I feel safer with that. That could all change if it ever packs up on me of course, but the way I see it there's more points of failure in a PC than a USB dongle.

Other that the price of them? What kind of problems?

It takes up a USB port which can be a problem for some.

Also, the Windows driver has been flaky from what I've read. On Windows 10 you have to set the service to delayed start any time you update it. On Windows 7 it kept asking for certain Windows updates to be installed, although I read in a recent iLok update that they no longer require this.

I haven't had any of these driver problems on the Mac side.

None here. But i'm sure there'll be a whole litany of issues posted here in an instant.

yep. it is kvr after all.
I am sure it will be mentioned that they break, which clearly is possible (as any physical device can break).... although it has never happened to me...and I am sure it will be mentioned it can be stolen.....
and how inconvenient it is for laptops that gig..

I hope the OP gets back his license, but sadly this is the perfect example why I was surprised when people cheered that there is a software ilok and try to encourage developers who only do hardware ilok to use software ilok..
To me it is a disaster waiting to happen.
good luck.

Sure they could have an ISO version of the USB device on their site? '$49.95' seems a bit pricey for a USB thumbdrive.

Is it possible to configure the Software iLok to get the details from my thumbdrive?

Post

Actually, since i got myself a USB 3.0 hub, the dongles have become much less of an issue for me. Of course, it would be nice without them, but, they don't really disturb now either. I can understand people's reservations towards dongles, what i don't understand is making a generality out of individually occuring issues, or even made up issues. If the thing described above was a general thing, wouldn't i be suffering from it too? I would guess so.

Nope. You will need the iLok. And, yeah, it's pricey, that's why i got mine used from eBay. AFAIK, you'll have to be careful with that though, because, the original owner could still have it registered. Or de-registering it may not even possible in some cases.

It's not a thumbdrive - it's a specialised cryptoprocessor running PACE's own code that contains a pretty tiny amount of flash memory for the licence codes.

Only Waves and Plugin Alliance have systems that let you put a licence on a regular thumbdrive.

Thanks for all your replies. Looks like I need the bloody hardware iLok
(and I have no hope of recovering that lost activation, it would seem.)

Incidentally, the product in question is Soundtoys' Little AlterBoy 5 that I picked up free an age ago.

BTW, i miss the "heads up" from the people that always claimed that iLok has been cracked now, so there's no more point for companies to use it. Wonder what happened to that. I guess they stuffed the security hole in the meantime, so there's no more mentioning it. :D
