Granular Convection (it's what mixed nuts do)

I feel like I've gone a bit outside my comfort zone genre-wise with this. I like some of what's going on here but turning this into a collaboration with someone more in a club headspace might have been good. I'm not really set up to do that though (a disadvantage of working with modular/analog synths and also wanting to keep making lots of music in short amounts of time).

Anyway, this is...

1. Rings (FM mode) modulating Tides, Warps (vocoder), Ornament & Crime (envelopes), Sputnik Quad VCF/VCA w/ Valhalla Plate
2. 0-Coast w/ Vapor, Space Modulator, Megaphone, TB EQ
3. (kick drum) Kermit, O&C, SQVCFA w/ Presswerk, Barricade
4. (more drums) Maschine
5. (saw/tri mix) Synchrodyne & Expand, Mini Slew (envelope/VCA), DPLPG
6. (reverby drum) Maschine, Maximizer, dBlueClipper, Metaverb, Barricade

I really dig that heterodyne tone

My band mate brought over his idiopan and we sampled each note.

I made a basic Kontakt patch where I mapped the notes chromatically. Then, I experimented with running them through various sounds from 99sounds.org within Kontakt's convolution unit to get some weird pad tones and gamelan-ish noises. So every sound in this track, other than the drums (BFD3), is just manipulated idiopan. The bass in the second half was achieved by tuning the lowest idiopan sample down a couple octaves and using an 808 kick as the convolution impulse.

I got the inspiration for this watching Pendle (Sound Dust) explain how he made his Plastic Ghost Piano.

This was just a quick sketch done in 3 hours, which is a weekly exercise I do with a friend of mine (we each take 3 hours to write, record, and mix a track from scratch, then we exchange renders and give feedback to each other). It's really like 4 or 5 ideas stitched together hastily.

I also used OrilRiver, ReaEQ, and Full Bucket Brigade Delay.

(also, there's a cameo riff in there from Secret of Mana for the SNES. that's the game that got me into making music)

I made a chill instrumental track (relatively speaking) and used:

Novation Ultranova
Addictive Drums 2 Black Oyster kit
Slate VMR, FG-MU, VCC
Arturia Minifilter V
Softube Tube Delay
Also a synth loop that came with Sonar that I mangled the hell out of with Slate VMR, Sandman Pro and Slate Verbsuite until you couldn't recognize it anymore

I made a tune with some piano samples (from tape) and a few (self recorded) drum loops.

Triframe

Fake sferics (whistles/pops/noise): Mini-Slew, Synchrodyne, Freez, Ornament & Crime, Sputnik QVCFA, Zlob Dual VCA. Barricade & ValhallaRoom.

Pads: 2x ArcSyn, 1x ValhallaPlate.

More ValhallaPlate, Thrillseeker, Transverb, Barricade, MTransformer.

(I like using MTransformer in post-production sometimes to lower the levels of the strongest bands, calming down too-intense fundamentals and bringing out more harmonics and noise.)

Nothing like pure Analog sound.

Mangling Clara from Ethera (ex Clara's Vocal Library) to sound vaguely like a man using Studio One's sample mangling plus iZotope Nectar Suite 2. Fun.
