+1. Beats all other methods for creating realistic drums, IMHO. Personally, I found this guy's video tutorials to be excellent, especially #2 of 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzXMingzgBw&t=982s.

I have Jamstix 3. It's really complex. Big learning curve to get JUST what you're looking for. MIDI can be exported out to be used with the drum set of your choice. The mapping is pretty GM standard except for maybe a few of the percussion sounds.

Also from time to time I ask someone to have a go at drums, it's interesting to see what someone else finds suiting, fresh ears and all, so yeah, if you got someone, worth a shot.

Remember once I had idea loop laid down, but it wasn't that inspiring to make something out of it, friend had a go with drums, than all just clicked, from that time he's my go-to guy for drums, always give it an different edge.
This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here? :D ShawnG

Something that can work really well is linear drumming -- it's basically monophonic, you never hit two things simultaneously, but you do something on pretty much every 16th (and when you don't, it's almost like an accent).

I like this video for an explanation of how that works, and for a little bit of insight into how drummers think:

That's a nice snare to sample... ;)

Learning to play drums is really worthwhile for programming them in general..

Hmm.. it just takes a lot of tweaking before a 4/4 basic snare/bass drum beat feel comes from the ground. It's boring but it surely pays off after a while.

Remember... producing is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. There's no work around for that IMO.

Change velocity on every hit wether it's kick, snare, hi-hat etc. I don't know how many times I've seen people set everything on 127 for metal and then they think it sounds good. So boring and robotic. Humanize function is never enough on a drum plugin. The faster you hit the softer the hits will be. And if after a fill it will start with a crash the last hit on snare, toms, will be automatically softer becuase a drummer is already on his way to the crash. As already said, study drum lessons on youtube will learn you better to think like a drummer.

Interesting! How long/strong is the tie? How high is the ceiling?

As a keyboard player you might find polyrhythms and odd meters (like in jazz) more interesting and fun. I do.

Shit man that's a good vid. Thinking about drumming by hand and foot instead of just kick and snare plus whatever else right? Gonna run 4 midi tracks into bfd from now on... 2 feet 2 hands. This is gonna kick ass.

1.- Learn to play drums with a Pad controller, check out Melodics.
2.- I use Push step sequencer, it is usefull and after I get the basic beat I try to play over it.
3.- Understand the genre conventions, for example in tech house 16th notes almost always should have swing or some type of nudge. Once you understand the vonventions in your genre programming will come more easily.

Adding a ghost note here and there. Learned that from Bob Ross :)

Got me inspired now. Gotta have 10 midi tracks for my piano stuff. 1 for every finger. Gonna rock this shit man.

I get my drumming inspiration in other ways...

Indulge me, if you will...

1.) Nice cymbals. No seriously, nice cymbals.

2.) Bare foot playing... :tu: ... be one with your drums, Daniel-san...

3.) Good posture... very important!!! Don't end up like Phil Collins.

4.) She's wearing ear protection... very smart!!! Might be more important than #3.

5.) Vic Firth in da house, yo.

10/10
You need to limit that rez, bro.
