You've made a properly complete arrangement with Noisetar, which already is a considerable accomplishment. I enjoy it musically almost entirely, except at 2:24, where you went with the lead "flute" for the Dorian 7th (2 halftones below tonic) rather than Ionian (1 halftone below tonic), which would've given it a little more spirit, if you asked me...kinda yanked on my senses a little and went against the sensibility of the sound itself somehow. For sure, it's a matter of taste, because it's not "wrong", just...a little "meh" to me. The rest, however, is very, very nice. Oh, maybe the "choo choo train" noise (to the left) went on a bit long without sounding sophisticated, sort of pulling down the sense of quality you otherwise establish so nicely. I would either fade it away before 2:38 to give your "grand finale" the proper space and distinction.

This is my reaction after a first listen. Hope it makes sense and inspires you a little?! Great to have you in the OSC gang, that's for sure!
AND congrats again on the second one! ;)
Thanks for taking the time to listen to my track and thanks for sharing your very precise observations. I tried playing that note the way you suggest (raising it a half step) and I like the result. It gives it a bit more emphasis which may or may not be what I want there. I like it both ways so I'll play with it a bit further and see. But beyond that your comment has led me to sit down and analyze things a bit further which has got my compositional juices flowing so I may make some bigger changes/additions.
And as for the chugging noise, that is exactly the kind of feedback I need because it is something I somehow tuned out but now it jumps out at me. It was intended to be a background element that blends in with the whole but I now see that it comes to the fore a bit too much at times and makes too much of its own statement (or non-statement which is more the problem). I will either have to back it off a bit as you say or maybe add some tonal and may be rhythmic movement to it. Again, thanks for the feedback and thanks for your kind words to a new (second time) father!

Oops, double post. :dog:

I believe, part of the problem with this "background" noise is that it's not really in the background. It will certainly help to get it to go into the background. Also, don't be shy to "change" rooms, so to say, or move through an environment. It will help tell your story and lead through your mood progression.
Anyway, you're very welcome! Looking forward to listen to your next iteration! :phones:

Attention :!:
Don't try to make music with this thing! The result can be unpredictable
Because it is a noisegenerator!
:-o

... but Brian wanted to challenge us ... :hihi:

Hey folks,

So I decided to take my rough track in a different direction, and had a play around with 'Old school' Dub (kinda, sorta!) My track for the OSC103: No i see Dub

https://soundcloud.com/zarf/zarf-no-i-see-dub
46 Instances of Noisetar in Ableton Live
Live FX: eq, delays, reverbs, compressors, Limiters (used heavily to even out volume levels in some sounds)
Other FX: OTT, toTape, Limiter6, TAL Reverb2

Dub echo FX created by feedback between return channels, a bit like on an analog desk.

That synth was definitely a challenge, kind of fun in the end once I stopped trying to create more sounds :)

Sorry wrong thread :/

I now used that sound-unstable V1.0 for Mac... Was that wrong, is there another more recent version for Mac?

Hm, well damn I cannot reload the song in 100% same state, a bunch of volumes and also sounds changed? Will upload the render then

Assuming that convolver reverbs/cabinet sims are off limits as they use samples?

Post

Nah, I don't think they're off limits at all. Especially not reverbs. Think sensibly and you'll realize the idea behind the restrictions. It may be a slippery slope at times, but it's about keeping the source clean. Pitch effects would change the fundamental nature of the source, while other treatments like cabinet sims simply build upon the actual source. Just don't get too creative, hehehe! ;)

Post

I shall plant my cleats firmly upon the slippery slope :)

My submission for this month. It was quite difficult to create stable melodic patches. Noisetar is very nice for wind noises, so I centered my track around those. I'm hoping that next month there will be a more accessible synth since the last months were kind of tricky.

It's not much but I don't want to deal with the synths changing when I reload the project.
