How to best create an closed hi hat from an open hi hat?
(Reason is I have lots of open hi hats samples with cool character and I want a the closed hi hat to match with the open)

First thing I would do is play with the decay stage of the amp envelope to make the sample shorter. This by itself can liken an open hat to a closed hat. Then, I'd look at adding suitably shaped white noise to add a stronger attack. This can also be done with FM, if you feel adventurous enough. Whichever it is, the trick is to add enough attack without affecting the sample too much ( so that you can still hear it and not just the 'noisy' attack).
Experiment.

Also, the attack stage can also be added with another closed hat sample, maybe slightly tweaked to make it very short.
