Why isn't there a group for audio plugin devs to help each other out and chat?

DSP, Plugin and Host development discussion.

Why?

A place to share ideas, share helpful resources, chat, get help with basic questions, or more advanced questions if there are experienced users around...

Facebook?

Skype?

Discord?

Is anyone just starting out and has basic questions? I might be able to help.

Should I start a group and if so, where?

What's this here then, where you've posted this idea?
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

There are forums, then there are chatrooms like IRC/Discord, then there are a hybrid form like Facebook.

Forums are a great place for long form discussion and disection of a topic, not good for "Hey, what's the formula for sin!", not good for simple/quick questions, not good for random thoughts, not good for "where can I find a good online graphic calculator (https://www.desmos.com/calculator)" or "why am I getting this error in visual studio" or "user is complaining about this!"

That's where chatrooms and hybrids come in. Quick, short-form discussion, networking, etc.

BertKoor, if you don't know the appeal, then it's not for you. The appeal would be obvious, I think, for those of us who want to network, chat, get quick help, share random thoughts, share audio demos of their latest experiments, etc.

Whatever.. but all you've described as "not good" takes place here too nevertheless.

Regarding IRC, isn't that dead, Jim?

We have a Discord channel for the handful of developers using Dplug. The young guns seem to prefer it over IRC :(

The problem is that there is a wide range of difference between expertise levels of dsp developers. Ranging from hobbists to the very best specialists. As a result, they have difficulties in understanding each other. You post something and you'll have answer ranging from quick -perhaps not so helpful- comments to very sophisticated replies that you may not understand, and occasionally, some unfortunate ridicule. Another problem is that a forum is not a place to solve an engineering problem, it takes some time to understand what somebody is trying to do and why, and even the best experts often can't figure out that quickly enough to formulate a suitable helpful reply. Under these conditions, you are looking for even quicker replies, right to the point. Not a realistic expectation in my opinion.

Just a thought, in regards to uhm...call it 'sustainable information' doesn't use forums make more sense compaired to IRC / chatrooms ?

Forums can be searched years later if I have a similar problem, IRC / chatrooms is a 'realtime only than the info is gone' thing no ?
(It's been years since I peeked into IRC)

I've had occasional good use of "chat" with coworkers thousands of miles away. Voice better than text. Over the years a couple of meeting softwares that had "one speaker at a time" voice plus anybody can text, into one or many parallel text threads. Mainly for daily meetings or specialized debug or planning meetings.

More ambiguously useful was "calls from out of the blue" where I'd be deep in the zone on whatever current task and a coworker blasts in from several states away with some entirely unrelated question, then it takes an hour to get back in the zone afterwerds. Simple politeness required answering calls, but overall IMO the loss to my productivity was not worth whatever minor benefit my "instant answer" may have been for someone else. Would have been overall better to be incommunicado except for set meeting times or whatever.

For non-work-related chat, haven't tried it much. Maybe somewhere weighty topics are discussed. The times I've dropped into public chats they seemed populated by people who type slow and innacurate with bad spelling, long lags and minimal interesting content.

person1: wassup?
person2: u r dude
[20 minute inactivity]
person2: l8ter
person1: cool
person3: hey wassup?
person1: it am

Which is the most popular for discussing DSP ideas and sharing code/ideas? I'll try that one first.

in regards to sustainable information - yes

forums are not a good place for certain types of conversations, because posting a message is slow, editing a message can be abused, and some other reasons i can't formulate right now
IRC shines there with quick communication similar to speech, except with text..
and yes, things are realtime and are gone.. that's why pretty much every decent IRC client has logging features, some channels are also logged (by bots) and automatically dumped to the internetz
the combination of using IRC + forums is a good one
i can (for example) quickly and inocently discuss some idea with some more clever folks than me, and then, eventually formulate a better question and post it on a forum
It doesn't matter how it sounds..
..as long as it has BASS and it's LOUD!

musicdsp has a good collection of DSP wisdom aggregated over the years as does KVR and corners of gearslutz. Just need todo site-specific searches.
