The approach is similar to the Imperfect approach, for sure. I didn't fuss too much over the samples, and really wanted to preserve the feel and sound of the actual instrument, not create an airbrushed over-mastered version of it. So, none of the samples have any processing apart from the minimum amount of noise reduction needed.

That's sort of the idea behind the Whole Sounds concept, leaving the sound as intact as possible. To me, it's those subtly rough edges, even if it's only a hint here and there, that give the instrument life.

Just when I thought I was well covered for sampled pianos, this wonderful sampled Baldwin Parlor Grand came along! There's something about the Baldwin piano attack & tone that just catches my ear as being authentic and soulful. No wonder musicians such as Ray Charles were drawn to it. I agree with the comparisons to the Imperfect Samples pianos, but having bought and played their Fazioli, this Baldwin Parlor Grand runs rings around it in playability, consistent dynamic response and pedalling accuracy. Highly recommended.

When I was a kid, Baldwins were considered top notch pianos, maybe second only to Steinway, and actually preferred by some artists. But unlike Steinway, the brand has suffered through some bad business decisions over the years and isn't what it used to be, but that doesn't detract from it's earlier reputation, and the sound of many of the beautiful Baldwins still being lovingly maintained today.

I've got another Baldwin sample set in the can, this time recorded from another American-manufactured Baldwin from the late '80s before the brand was acquired by Gibson who eventually stopped manufacturing pianos in the US altogether. That ought to be out in a few months.

I would love to get some feedback on the instrument! Check it out and let me know what you think.

The focus in sampling the piano was realism and authenticity - my aim was to get as close as I could to recreating the experience of a playing a piano I've known and loved playing for decades.
