Ableton can do granular synthesis right inside his clip or with the simpler for control

Zebra 2 + PadshopPro, best combination for drones. Zebra - Physical modeling/FM/RM/Additive/Wavetable/Noise, very versatile synth, and PadshopPro its the most deeply tweaked granular synthesizer.
And you need to add reverbs ValhallaDSP.

You could name any synth really but a couple not mentioned so far are Twisted Tools Scapes in Reaktor and a synth that gets little discussion here for some reason despite its quality, Sugar Bytes Factory. This has an outstanding modulation system (based a little in concept on an EMS VCS3 patch panel, but far exceeding it in functionality). The entire modulation system can self-modulate in interesting ways and this can easily impart subtle movement into drones.

I chained these FX together and was even able to turn a standard drum pattern into a cool drone!

Hybrid 3 comes with some good drones out of the box that you can tweak.
