I've decide to start a project of mine on this kind of music but i don't want to fill the PC (i usually compose on the laptop) of million plugs so...
What are the Best Synths for classic 70's Prog Rock (Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Kansas, Rush, Pink Floyd etc)..? Please, specify original model/name and relative VSTi...
Freeware are welcome!
I'm also curious to know what Synths uses Kevin Moore (ex Dream Theater, OSI, Chroma Key, Fates Warning)
Thanks in advance... ^_^

There weren't many syths to choose from back then and appears most of these bands used either an Arp Oddesy or a Mini. The exceptions being Tony Banks with his Arp Pro Solis and Keith Emerson with his Moog modular.Turello wrote:I've decide to start a project of mine on this kind of music but i don't want to fill the PC (i usually compose on the laptop) of million plugs so...

Also most commonly used were RMI pianos, Hammond organs, Melotrons, Solina string machines, Wurlitzer and Rhodes electric pianos, acoustic grand pianos to round off the rig.
My picks for these have been:
Acoustic Samples B-5 Wurlizer and Rhodes , Hollow Sun's RMI piano, Ivory 2 Studio Grands, GEFORCE MTron Pro and for synthesizers either Roland Cloud's SH2, Promars and System 1 and Omnisphere 2.

@Aloysius: one creativity only!
@JJ_Jettflow: never heard about Roland SH2, Promars and System 1, could you post some example?

They are 3 mono synths from the Roland Cloud collection so if you do like such subscription models, you may want to pass on them.Turello wrote:well, thanks...

You can get a free month to try them though.

If you're going to do any prog rock, especially old Genesis stuff, you are absolutely going to need this for your Mellotron.

Accept no substitutes. Everything else is a poor imitation at best. I used this for my project and it was absolutely indispensable. I won't post any examples because people will start bitching that I'm hijacking the thread and I'm just not in the mood. If you want to hear what it sounded like on my project, PM me and I'll send you a link.

It's kind of funky, but Xils3 is pretty much a mandatory for this genre imo. I have the LE version, I think it was $20. Pink Floyd and Gong used the original way back when.
