EOB Sustainer Strat

I'm not pushing the product but it's interesting and I think for a number of us.
Ed O'Brien, Radiohead, had a Fender Strat with a "sustainer driver" pickup thingy manufactured...

Hunh... interesting. Neat, actually. Still, I always hated how the sustainer thingy always goes in the neck slot -- I understand why, but I'd really miss the tones Hendrix and Blackmore got (my fave Strat tones). Maybe I'll drive out to my nearest Banjo Depot and see if I can test drive one.

quite likely, but I think I would want it part of the guitar design rather than slap one in to a regular axe. Me being not very apt at mechanical reasoning.

I've been drooling over this all day. The sustainer on here is a Fernandes. Fripp and Hackett use these in their Fernandes/Burny guitars. I've always fancied a sustainer guitar, but didn't fancy destroying my 79 Anniversary Strat to get one. I can't see the missus approving.

find a used guitar with a sustaniac. Work out all your sustainer issues on that. Getting another guitar never devalued my LP or My Strat

I looked a bit for getting something for home use - the feeling of sustained notes and feedback - using a powersoak load which is dead silent. I really missed that part.

DigiTech FreqOut pedal solved that part quite well, I think.
You can choose of having toggle on/off(like effect pedals normally do) or just press for the sustained notes and release foot when done.
You select which kind of harmonics you want, and how strong, and how fast after engage.

Maybe Fernades Sustainer is more alternative for eBow - but if looking for the feedback hang kind, FreqOut is quite good.

But most FreqOut YT review vids are terrible - so don't take any as good example. Find someone that do it the way you intend to use it. Many used it like octaver kind of effect - which is not where it shines at all.

I have two Sustainer guitars. One is a Fernandes and the other a retrofit baritone Tele.

The Fernandes Ravelle looks like a two humbucker Les Paul-type, but the neck is, of course, the Sustainer pick-up. As such, when it is not in sustainer mode it acts as a regular single-coil pick-up. In this instance it sounds as beefy as the humbucker, so fits the guitar's Les Paul-ish qualities well.

On the baritone Tele you can obviously see it's not a regular Tele-style neck pick-up (although being a baritone it has an extra middle Tele-style pick-up), and again in non-sustainer mode it sounds pretty damn good - I was quite surprised as I thought I might not use that position as I assumed the regular pick-up mode would perhaps not be a great pick-up.

I think both sound good as regulat single coils and of course you gain the sustain mode.

I barely ever use the middle pickup on my trusty old strat. If it had the sustainer there (is that possible? I don't know how those things work), I'd be more likely to consider it.

EDIT: Though apparently (having just read the rest of the thread) in non-sustain mode they sound like regular pickups. So, maybe it doesn't matter.
