In my experience I would recommend Reaper, Its the closest to Sonar in terms of Functionality. I use it for a lot of audio work. Also its really customizable and just straight up powerful, once you learn how to tame it it really is a Monster of a program.

This being said Cubase, Studio One and Bitwig are all fantastic DAWs too. It really depends on what one appeals to you.

Logic is also really nice all in one package to and if it ran windows id probably recommend it over reaper but Sonar Refuges of course are Windows users and forking over money for a new computer ALONG with a new daw is ridiculous :hihi:
Worth noting however.

The post above this is likely bait, viewer discretion is advised.

from this list I would try
Cubase
Studio One
Reaper

Studio One has BlackFriday 50% sale https://shop.presonus.com/products/soft ... ofessional# but if u heavily depend on MIDI than Cubase is better choice

Are there any crossgrade offers on Cubase 9.5 Pro? Reccomendations on where to purchase?
TIA.

P.S My heart goes out to the Cakewalk family and especially the employees. Especially at this time of year when the holiday season is here.

I moved from Sonar to Reaper a few years ago and found it totally painless. Very low costs were and still are a happy side benefit. Just $60.
Great videos here:

Can you elaborate on Cubase vs Reaper regarding midi? I posted with this question here

Thank you Steve. That seems like an awesome deal.

About 15 years ago I was in the same boat when Apple shut down Windows support for Emagic Logic Audio and I switched to Sonar XL 2.2. It was so much better to use than Logic I was actually a little glad Apple did what they did. I've now worked thru the five stages of grief:

Denial. Gibson just made a mistake and this will all be fixed soon.
Anger. F*$@# Gibson!
Bargaining. For sure another company will buy and resurrect Cakewalk.
Depression. This sux. I'll never be able to make music again.
Acceptance. You know there are actually plenty of other DAWs out there that may be better and for now Sonar still works.
Steve, I was also Logic 4 and Logic 5.5 user on Windows, and it was bad when they got bought by Apple. This is when I switched to Sonar. Should of went with Cubase!

I was thinking the same thing about stages of grief, but I am on Bargain stage now, I actually kind of excited to try Cubase again (Used to have Cubase VST).

I was interested in waveform because of Composers Tools. I actually just bought it the other week.

WARNING: Bad Idea!

First of all, I had issues with activation. While everything activated the way it intended, I keep getting constant beeps and I cant tell why (when playing the Demo song).

My VSTs did not show correctly. When I opened it first time, it said, "These VSTs failed..." and there was list of like 40 plugins. All native Instruments plugins failed and almost everything else.

The tracks in it are on the right and use of real estate is just weird. I could never figure out where is what and where I am. I have about 20 years of DAW expedience, and i was like, "What in the world is this?"

I contacted tech support via e-mail and told them about all the problems and that I need refund unless they have easy fix. I never heard back from them. I contacted them again and never heard back from them.

Awful.

I'm not so sure that the current versions of Studio One or Cubase are neccessarily what you'd call a safe haven for a Sonar refugee ... at the very least I'd wait to see whether some pretty major bugs to get worked out

Watched video on reaper. What an ugly GUI! Where are all the colors? I love the colors- I am a girl- the brighter is the better.

The must have features that I need:

1. Good MIDI workflow and editing tools. Chords designer, Piano Roll, Step Sequencer. I have seen Piano Roll in Abelton was impressive as it would allow to select only lower notes of chord, only upper notes and so on. Sonar could not do it. I like to be able to enter Chords such as C Major, A Minor instead of entering them note by note in Piano Roll.

2. Good VST implementation. I like to have 2 tracks per Instrument. For example, if I want to insert Omnisphere, I like to have separate Audio and Midi tracks.

3. Ability to Mute/Unmute individual audio clips- let's say I slice audio track- I need to mute some parts of it and leave other parts playing.

4. How are the VST Software synths Freeze (Convert to audio)? In Sonar, I play MIDI notes first, Midi notes trigger sounds from VST Instrument. If I like it, I use Freeze, and it freezes or converts it to Audio. I like to be able to Unfreeze it if I need to and have it as Software Synth again. The new function of Sonar was that it allowed to hit "Record" on the Instrument Audio track and it would real-time record what software synth was playing. Insteda of Freeze pre-recorded MIDI to convert in Audio, I could just play melody in real time and it would record in Audio. Can Cubase (my first choice) do it?

5. Melodyne. I am a vocalist with picch issues, I MUST HAVE melodyne. I was just told that there is no Rewire in Cubase, then some one told me- there IS rewire, and that I would need to Insert Melodyne on the Track as effect and it would show the Audio track in its window. is it so? Thank you.

Another question: Can Cubase have multiple windows to use on multiple screens? Can I open VST Plugins in separate windows?

I believe I read you are a fellow Sonar refugee, yes? I'm wondering about where to go next, and don't yet have complete answers to all my own questions, let alone yours. I would however just mention:

Re 1 -- for simple chord entry, try this free little VST:

http://www.codefn42.com/chordz/index.html

and for both chord entry that and for chord progression design, consider EZKeys, it's powerful, easy to use, comes with its own quite serviceably good sampled piano, and can send midi out to drive other VSTis.

Re 5 : Acoustica Mixcraft 8 Pro, which is on sale right now for $99, has Melodyne ARA integration, and comes with Melodyne Essential.
