Some nice geetars there. I was just thinking though, that in light of recent events, now is possibly not the best time to be expressing an admiration of Gibson. :hihi:

Yeah, Gibson killed-off Cakewalk.

If Cakewalk was in that bad of shape, it was probably justifiable homicide, self-defense, or, even a mercy killing.

in my view, gibson will always be some amalgamation of ... that legendary 'chirp' of a jimmy page solo... paul stanley with firebird, ace frehley with that vibrato on a les paul... randy rhoads or michael schenker with a flying v... buck dharma with an sg... ted nuget (the entertainer, not the human being behind the facade) with a hollow body... on and on... a lot of great guitars... a lot of great guitar players....

alas, my affordability these days in particular, is along the lines of $100 epiphones, which are actually quite cool for the price point...

be that as it may, gibson definitely has a long track record of musical success...

Post

oh, that firebird is actually quite cool... good looking for my tastes, and within the price range ....

This is a small bodied Jazzmaster. The balance is perfect. The tonal range is out of this world with the included electronics. The P-90 pups are custom wound by Alan Entwistle himself. http://www.entwistlepickups.com/

I love this guitar a lot. The purple and the tortoiseshell shouldn't work, aesthetically speaking, but they do. The neck is kinda chunky, but not overly so. Not a bad fret on her, though I have the action semi-high. That might change if I take her down a spot or two. No worries.

Up next, another Revelation:

Could have bought an Epiphone Dot going for exactly the same price, but I thought why not buy a boutique guitar, something a bit different? So I did. All made in China and Indonesia of course. The pups on this black beauty are sick. Rich, warm, overtones of fuzzy beautiful harmonics. Think Tony Iommi. Not very varied. There is kind of warm, and then, a bit warmer, or bit brighter, depending on your viewpoint. Not a massively versatile guitar sonic wise, but an absolute joy to play. Again, you can buy these Entwistle pups from the link I gave.

The Epiphone Dot went up a hundred bucks in price, while this one got taken down and they don't make it anymore. Must have been a complaint or a lawsuit. Who knows. I think some shops still have them. Snap 'em up while you can. It's a beautiful guitar.

It's got one buzzy fret up around the high strings on the second and third frets, but that will be taken care of. It sings like a charm. Very rounded and full. I picked this over the Epiphone because it has a 25" scale length, with most 335's being the standard Gibson 24.75" scale. It's not quite Fender scale length at 25.5", but a nice happy medium. It kind of makes this guitar unique for me. I can always get an Epiphone again. I know that Gibson varied the 335 scale length over the years, but let's not quibble. 24.75" is pretty much where it's at, just like the Les Paul...

One of my heros on the guitar is Robben Ford and his old Epiphone is something to die for. Then again, that is way back when they were actually made by Gibson. In this video he cheaps out and plays his Gibson:

Lots of vids of Robben playing his no.1 guitar.

Anyway. This Revelation is a very nice guitar for the money. You pay a bit extra for the brand as Entwistle is located in China these days and oversees production. You pay a bit more, but you get extra quality. It still has some faults though.

Here's Robben playing his fabled Epiphone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhv0xhPpzP4

A master at work. Incorporating Jazz, Blues, and a bit of Funk. Maybe a bit of Rock 'n' Roll too. That's his Epiphone. Sounds pretty amazing to me.

I had one of these on order for the last 3 months. But I just gave up in the end. They really aren't that great. The quality control is quite bad in fact. Gibson as a whole have become a right shit show. My Les Paul from them is quite bad. And Dawson's who I got it from sent it back to me worse than when I got it. Won't be be buying Gibson or buying from Dawson's ever again.

Putting the money towards a proper guitar. Though you might get lucky - some of them are good.

The 335 by Revelation I showed just up above is kind of a lawsuit guitar, as in, they made them one day, then they didn't the next. And the day after that, the Epiphone dot guitars went up a whole hundred bucks in price.

Revelation still do one, but it's not the same shape. I remember when I was going to buy one, they had them the EXACT same price, what a coincidence. Then when they were gone. Epiphone goes up to 400 quid. Yeah right.

Gibson, Epiphone are such gougers. Glad I got my Chinese made Revelation lawsuit 335.

They make them in the same factory. Been doing research on the whole ghost guitar building thing for a while now.

In fact. The workers at Revelation probably get treated better than the workers at Epiphone, even though they share the same floor - perhaps they have a nicer manager? Who knows. Who cares really, if they can get a really nice guitar for 50 bucks cheaper?

But funny though isn't it, Epiphone Dots going up a hundred bucks in a matter of weeks. Not really the exchange rate. Not really supply and demand. More just cornering the market.

Don't get me wrong. I think brands should be respected and copyright maintained etc. etc. - but a little competition is good. Or rather was good. I would have been better off buying the big brand Epiphone, as it is now worth a whole hundred bucks more than my guitar. In theory. But then again, there are a shed load more of them than there are of mine, so good luck with that. Most people that buy guitars do it as an investment these days or at least consider it seriously in the big picture.

I wouldn't sell mine for a thousand bucks. And that is with a dodgy fret as well.

I really want that Epiphone SG-400, but if I have to pay that kind of money, I'll go again with a boutique guitar like the Revelation.

I don't want Epiphone or Gibson to fail. I just want them to sort themselves out.

I may still get that 'Les Paul' copy though. But they don't arrive till next year now. I've already got too many guitars.

...interesting... with the Revelation guitars, it seems that they ship out of England.... for just under $300 including shipping, there's a 'sunburst' version of that purple Jazzmaster on Ebay.

Played a couple of the Revelation guitars and they were pretty good for the dosh. The one that I fancy is the quarter tone version:
