How to tell if a .wav file was created from a .mp3 file?

I am backing up my old tracks and I find some wav files of my tracks in full length version. Back in the old days, I'd usually convert everything to mp3, so when I come across an old track in .wav, I wonder if perhaps I simply converted the mp3 into a .wav for some reason. Would be nice to be able to know for sure, one way or the other. I'd be quite happy if it was the original wav

You also have the MP3? Then convert the MP3 back to WAV. Invert phase and mix it with your WAV version. When the result is silence, then your WAV was converted from that MP3. Otherwise the result is whatever MP3 compression threw away from your WAV. Or you found an alternative version!
I guess that all can be scripted by a nifty script kiddie with PowerShell and VLC Player's command line interface...

generally mp3 tend to avoid recording frequency above 15Khz
you will see high cut in the wave file when it is observed through spectrum analyser

That happens only with bitrates of 128kbps and lower...Apratim wrote:generally mp3 tend to avoid recording frequency above 15Khz

You could also simply compare the file dates. The oldest file is the original.

Thanks guys. I have a few things to try out, the first being the inverted phase technique. I should also still have the mp3 version.
I was hoping for a simpler method though, like telltale signs of downsampling or upsampling when zooming into the wave itself.
How would I use SPEK for this purpose?

I'm not familiar with an easy tool. SPEK is good for checking the quality of audio, with caveats. It can be used check if you see a WAV file that was tagged as an original mix, but is actually an mp3, a sign it could be stolen.
