I'm trying to convert a proprietary sequenced music format to MIDI and need to know what a certain effect is called, as I'm not very good with musical terminology, and don't really know where to find the answers to be honest.

A lot of the command numbers in this format simply matches with the standard MIDI controller numbers. However, this command (#15) appears to be undefined among the MIDI CCs, so I think it must be a custom implementation of some effect.

I have already looked at the driver code with Interactive Disassembler, but unfortunately it doesn't tell me much, unlike the other commands I've seen so far.

I do have a DAW installed on my OS (Renoise), and it has an effect called Surround Width which creates a similar sound (imo at least), but I haven't found anything similar for the MIDI format? I'm just going by the effect/CC names though, so I may be missing the obvious...

We can rule out Reverb Depth as I've already found the proper command number for that.

So without further ado: below are two renditions of the same track. The only difference between them is the effect level/depth, which can range from 0-127. The former has no effect (0), and the latter has maximum effect (127). The command is only used once, before any Note On events occur, and it affects the track throughout (as you'll probably notice). To me, the effect makes it seem like the sound is further "back" sort of? I don't know how else to explain it, but I hope someone knows!

Any suggestions are welcome!

As far as I understand it, if the MIDI association says CC#15 is undefined, hardware developers can use it for whatever they like. I don't know what music format you are talking about, but I remember that for example Yamaha developed their XG format, where they extended MIDI and added a lot of effects, which simply are not represented by the original MIDI specification.

To me the effected one sounds wider and there's some modulation going on, so I'd guess it as some kind of chorus/delay/vibrato type effect.

As with any other conversion there are cases where it just doesn't match. Accept that. The effect is too subtle anyway and does not have an implementation in pure midi.

offhand, it sounds like some kind of 'stereo widener' or 'doubler'. the '127' is more 'surround sound-ish'.
