This is driving me nuts. I love both (yes I have two) Launchpad Pro's but they don't have mod wheel/pitch bend or joystick.

Is there any company that makes a simple midi hardware device for this?

It has always amazed me that no one has made a decent midi/usb joystick specifically for audio given how many synths have xy pads....there are a few for Eurorack and you can convert CV to midi...
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S49MK2, Studio One, BWS, Live 12. PUSH 3 SA, Osmose, Summit, Pro 3, Prophet8, Syntakt, Digitone, Drumlogue, OP1-F, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Nord Drum3P, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

See http://www.audiofront.net/MIDIExpression.php
These boxes take care of converting expression pedal signals to MIDI.
You could rewire an old analog gaming joystick for this (the type with X-Y potmeters)

FWIW, it'd be quite easy to DIY an analogue joystick to MIDI with an Arduino.

There's also game-joystick to MIDI software out there. Bome's Translator probably does it too.

Thanks guys, all good suggestions.

If it were just about me I'd pick up a McMillen Softstep and call it a day. The thing is I want to start a youtube series... Grid Licks
Using a Novation Launchpad Pro (though any 8x8 grid controller would do) Focusing on playing licks, riffs and chord progressions from the surface. If I do it then a viewer should be able to do it as well with minimal investment. Right now I'm thinking about a Korg NanoKey Studio

I agree it's surprising that there isn't a simple hardware joystick designed for xy with synths.

Is there anything in the iPad domain that might be suitable? I don't know a lot about using tablets with music but am interested in exploring a little more.

If you have any os with multi-touch capacity, (windows 10 tablet etc) you should be able to just touch and drag on screen.
That's not the issue the issue is that it should be something reachable next to you as you play your controller.

NanoKey Studio has one built in so I'm going with that as it has a small footprint and can sit along side my other controllers.

I use one of these:

best joystick action I've come across, just very smooth, great feel and ergonomics and stays exactly where you put it - built like a tank too

I have one of these

Amazon: why not use an alternative

Theres a few ways to use a USB X-Box controller for midi.
I cant imagine there is a cheaper or easier way.

Years ago I used a PS2 controller. Hooking both analog joysticks and the shoulder buttons to midi made for a super interesting 'instrument'.

This is my go to;
