Trying to find a scripting AU for Logic Pro X

I've seen it in the last few days but I can't seem to find it now. It was an Audio Unit plugin which allowed a degree of scripting using a programming language based on Lisp/Scheme. Does anyone know which one I'm talking about? Alternatively, any other programming/scripting AU Plugin would be of interest, although not that Lua one that's knocking around. That one's 32 bit, and doesn't load in Logic Pro X.

I'm confused - Logic provides a scripting interface right in the dropdown for MIDI FX in the channel strip. Is that the one you saw? It is part of Logic Pro, you don't have to go with a separate plug.

The one I saw used a dialect of Lisp/Scheme. I also mentioned and discarded a 32-bit example I've seen using Lua. The one built into Logic Pro X, as I understand it uses Javascript. I would prefer to have the choice of a different language. Besides, I was hoping to use whatever I found alongside the built-in arpeggiator unit. Unless I can use the scripting Midi FX alongside the arpeggiator Midi FX, then that doesn't help me. As far as I can tell I am limited to just 1 Midi FX plugin.

I stand corrected, it seems that I can use more than one Midi FX unit per channel strip. It's just that the Logic UI does not make it obvious that you can hover at the bottom of the existing Midi FX units and add another one. Maybe I can hold my node and use Javascript as a last resort.

Don't think that's the one you were thinking about but here it is another one anyway.

And yes, Logic's Scripter use Javascript.

Thanks @nordickvr, I did glance at that one but I was rather hoping to spend a little less on this particular project!

You'll all breathe a huge sigh of relief when I tell you I found the package. It's called Impromptu and can be found here at KVR https://www.kvraudio.com/product/impromptu_by_impromptu and its home at http://impromptu.moso.com.au/index.html. Development seems to have stopped now, but there's a new project called Extempore https://extemporelang.github.io/ which has taken over from it. I'm still wading through the docs to determine what type of programming is involved. But at least I found it after a couple of hours searching KVR!

Pretty interesting, thanks for sharing!

Aren’t Extempore/Impromptu AU hosts, not plugins?

There’s Faust, but I’m not sure that’s what you’re looking for, plus I’m not sure it compiles down to AU format:

Impromptu seemed to be in part, at least, made up of plugins. Extempore seems to be a fully fledged development environment that I am just in the process of trying to get working with VSCode as the code editor complete with syntax and build support at https://github.com/extemporelang/vscode-extempore. It, like Impromptu before it, uses the same Scheme/Lisp style syntax, so is quite interesting from a coding point of view, and at least it's not Javascript. Golang (the language of the Gods) would be my first choice but you can't have everything I guess!

Saw the current incarnation of Faust playing in Edinburgh a few months ago. They were impressive.

I've seen Faust on several occasions in London, including one of the most surreal things I have ever encountered at a gig. The support was the amazing Charles Hayward (ex-drummer from This Heat) and as he finished his last number, I thought I heard the sound of a marching band in the distance. Oh, the crazy scamps are going to play some marching band music over the sound system, I thought to myself. Not so, the music got louder and louder and then I looked around and saw a 20 piece marching band, all dressed up to the nines, wander around the dance floor marching and playing their selection of brass instruments. After a few minutes they left and were replaced on stage by Faust who proceeded to rock as only they know how. Not a word was ever mentioned about the marching band! I promise that I had consumed nothing more psychedelic than a couple of pints of lagers and a couple of JD and cokes, but my sense of tangible reality was sorely put to the test that night!

:D Ha - sounds like Faust - I definitely believe you. Heard multiple similar stories. My mate was in a band that supported Faust once, and apparently they couldn't get hold of a brass band in that particular town but managed to get (iirc) a kids choir to do something similar. In Edinburgh, they didn't have a brass band or choir, but they did have 2 ladies knitting throughout the gig, one at each side of the stage.

And speaking of interesting use of brass sections - in 2006 I saw Sigur Ros at Dalhalla (an amazing venue built in a semi-flooded quarry in Sweden) and they started the gig with their brass section playing while being rowed around from behind the stage in a boat!
