Hi guys, having a real problem recreating a sound using FM synthesis

Its what you might know as "a donk" bass, ive read pretty much every post on every forum regarding people wanting to recreate this sound and followed every bit of advice given in each of these.
The problem is the typical donk bass you hear in modern tracks is weak compared to the traditional donk

Here is the example of what im trying to recreate

https://clyp.it/abtiz2oj# (https://clyp.it/abtiz2oj#)

Ive tried for many months with many FM capable synths and learnt alot along the way but still cant recreate what im after, im now using FM8 and trying again and again and again, and dont intend on giving up until I get the sound im after

Is it one sound? Is it samples layered? Can it be achieved as one Sound?

So if anybody with experience in FM synthesis can shine some light on this for me I would be very greatful

And if anybody is going to suggest for me to "Check out the Donk Machine VST" please dont as its pants

Many Thanks

You should buy a Yamaha TX81Z, get an editor, and just test it out if you haven't already. They are cheap, and add some nice dirt and that low midrange boost that you might be looking for. If it doesn't work out, just sell it.

I made some FM percussion sounds on the TX81Z through randomization. They won't be exactly what you're looking for, but might give you an idea of how the TX81Z sounds different from FM8.

You can download the sysex and load them into FM8: http://www.audiobombs.com/items/1400/fm ... maha-tx81z

And then compare the sound from FM8 to the multi-samples I recorded from the TX81Z of the same sounds: http://www.audiobombs.com/items/1394/fm-series-volume-3

Hey man! Thanks for the awesome reply, I ended up on a TX81Z patch downloading marathon after your suggestion, and managed to come across a patch called "Ritual" which was pretty spot on with with a bit of tweaking in FM8

Now im having problems with the sound from FM8 not being uniform on each note, sort of sounds like what it would if I wasnt retriggering the OCS (which I am btw), then I thought I'll just load it into Dexed and see if that works any better, only to find the patch wouldn't load (MEH)

Where did you get the Ritual patch? You mind sharing?

EDIT: NM, I found it ;)
