Odd request I know, but I'd like to create a simple test for real time / single core DAW performance. A very demanding freeware plugin should do the trick - anyone know of any contenders? The more brutal the demands, the better - thanks.

Wave arts tube saturator is supposed to be pretty demanding. In general look at saturation effects with heavy oversampling options; softamp PSA at 16x oversampling should be a substantial hit!

Wanted to recommend that one too. :) Wave Arts Tube Saturator Vintage. It's free, and, as far as i could see, pretty hard on CPU. Very nice sound though.

Put this into High CPU mode and 4x oversampling, and it becomes very demanding:

a long time ago I uninstalled Ambience reverb vst because it took to much CPU. nice sound though http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=568

+1 for the SGA freebie. I remember uninstalling it because of CPU use. =]

You could demo Kaleidoscope!

Turns out that the SGA 1156 is absolutely a beast, and its easy for anyone to download. My rig in Cubase couldn't run a single instance set to 4x oversampling and hi cpu!

It probably isn't the right forum for the end result here, but if anyone is curious I wanted to created a DAWbench type test for real time / single core performance, as all the existing tests are really for whole-project. In my experience, I hit the real time limits before the multicore ones. I've created a modified DAWbench Reaper project, with a single channel loaded with 8 disabled instances of the SGA 1156, set to hi cpu and x1 oversampling - https://www.dropbox.com/s/oj2myvmne1xh3 ... e.zip?dl=0 . But if you want to create your own, it's just 5 audio tracks playing to hear when it all falls apart, and this one loaded track with the 8 inserts.

My Reaper project can play 5 on a non-overclocked 4930k at a 256 buffer, if anyone is bored do let me know what results you get.

SGA1156 - excellent choice :D

I got 6 before it crackles.
Win7, i7 2700K with a MOTU 424 PCI-E card, 256 samples buffer

Edit: @ 44.1k, think that matters too

Ooh, didn't think about sample rate - I was 44.1 too and a Babyface Pro card. You at stock 3.5ghz?

I'm fully expecting the results to track Geekbench single core scores, will be keen to see if my theory is correct. My score is 3500, yours according to the Geekbench 4 charts is 3934. I guess by the time GB4 hits about 5000 you'd be able to run all 8 inserts, at which point I guess its a case of switching to 2x oversampling to make the test harder.

Yes, no overclocking atm.
