Can anyone tell me what's going on with this fluttery effect in Corbin's Revenge Song?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

Hi. This is the song.
At a few points the drone or the bass... sorry, I'm not sure how to describe it, but they kind of lose their smoothness. It sounds like something is breaking up. You can hear it a bit at around the 1:30 mark, and more pronounced at 2:40 to 2:50. Is it an overdriven tape emulation thing? I'd love to know how to go about recreating it if anyone has any ideas. Thanks

~edit~

I've just been reading about saturation, could it be a lot of that?

I'd say it's simply amplitude modulation with a rather high frequency of 15Hz or so...
