I know this is very minimalist and not the most unique sounds, so there are probably many ways to get here, but how would you? thanks

I think its more about the effects than which synth was used. Huge reverbs, delay with lots of feedback, and there's a distortion being used from time to time.

Personally, as I'm getting really lazy in my old age, I'd turn to a sample based synth, especially for those vocal like sounds. No sense beating your head against a wall with something like Diva or some Minimoog emulation. Most VA synths, to get those kind of sounds, you're going to be spending way too much time because the presets that come with those type of synths simply won't match at all. Something like Serum? Forget it. You're going to have to come up with your own wavetables and then wrestle with getting those mellow drones out of a normally harsh sounding instrument. Can it be done? Sure. But who wants to bother spending that kind of time if all you want to do is make music?

Demo some sample based synths and see if there is a soundbank or part of a soundbank dedicated to soundscapes.

A good synth, though it's old as hell, for this kind of stuff is ABSynth 5. You can also get these sounds out of Synclavier V but I don't know how much of the factory library will accommodate you.

Personally, I'd just head right over to Omnisphere. But I don't think you want to spend $500 on drones.

You're going to get a lot of suggestions in this thread for just about every synth in creation because everybody has got their favorite pet. But you're going to find that for most of them, you're not going to find what you need unless you create it yourself. And on many of these synths, you're going to find that it's not easy.

In addition, you're going to need a good reverb. Most built in reverbs suck.

Wolfgang Palm's synths are very good for these type of sounds as they are generally mellow to begin with. I just don't know how much of the factory libraries dedicate themselves to these sounds. But check out Wavemapper 2, Wavegenerator, Infinite Pro and especially Phonem.

They will probably be your best bet besides ABSynth 5 and Synclavier.

Hope this helps.

You want synth to program or synth that got presets like that?
This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here? :D ShawnG

The thing about Absynth 5 for 'voice-like' sounds is really in the Cloud filter with type = Vowel, for me.
Also same with the Aetherizer effect.

That's a good tip.

Another thing...I saw some clips with Cliff Martinez playing a Crystal Baschet. I think distorting some of those kind of sounds...maybe adding this type of Cloud filter...and verbs could be a cool approach as well.

Yes, I get some very vocalesque and breathy things out of the Glass instruments, Sonic Couture's library (one is the Crystal Bachet, in fact).
The 'instrument' page has EQ and Filter EQ with a potentiometer for the degree velocity affects the patch, and one for how deep the envelope is changing it up. And the Drive, modeled tape sounds so good and is useful here.

Budding film score composers, take note: Martinez uses software synths like Omnisphere and u-he, arranging in Ableton Live, but calls himself a preset guy. However, you probably don't own a gamelan metallophone or 17 baritone steel drums from Trinidad—the latter of which are prominently featured on the "Solaris" soundtrack

I asked Cliff this very question not three days ago. I knew that at one point his one and only synth was a Studio Electronics SE-1, and I asked him if he had used it on Contagion. He told me that the SE-1 had been gathering dust for months and had finally been unscrewed from the rack, and that the synths on Contagion were basically just Omnisphere, Trillian, and U-He Zebra - which surprised me.

For me, it's almost all software synthesizers, and there are patches that I make which are software emulations of vintage synthesizers from the 70s, like the ARP 2600, there's a software version of that.

I don't know if a listener can notice the contrast. A big difference from Drive for example, because that's also inspired by vintage software emulations of synthesizers from the 80s. But we tried to find stuff from the 70s, really early synthesis, in software form. I didn't pick up too many acoustic instruments, in fact, I don't think I used any for Neon Demon. It's almost all synthesizer.

CM: There were a couple of vintage software synthesizers that I was enamoured of. One was a software emulation of the Roland Super Jupiter, and another one was the ARP 2600, so I was trying to get a kind of old-fashioned '70s synthesizer sound.
Omnisphere, Trillian, and U-He Zebra (plus just "U-He") are named, the 3rd and 4th link sound like Arturia stuff to me.

Some other stuff, though not exactly a neutral source (he does like that Baschet Cristal):

There are a number of pieces in the show that are almost exclusively AEON.
