I never actually played one...but just curious.

It is a pretty rudimentary monosynth....and maybe too many similarities to a Minimoog to justify a proper modeling?? Same filter?

It just looks so COOL....

Judging from sound demos, it sounds great... i figure because of the control panel, and because it probably doesn't sound that much different to the Minimoog, and doesn't have that "legendary" status, developers won't bother. Can't blame them, i must say.

I think all moog synths sound the same anyway.

I don't think Moog makes any vsti's. They do make some apps though. And some of their synths can be edited with computer vst.

IMO they have a unique sounding low growl. It of course sounds like a Moog, but it's distinctive to me at least. Obvious recordings of this would be Devo all over the New Traditionalist record.

The one that blows me away is the Memorymoog, only the Memorymoon which is still 32 bit Windows only.. It's vastly different sounding to the Minimoog or it's poly brethren from that time.

The original Minimoog was fully discrete without pre-built Osc, filter, envelope and VCA chips.

Memorymoog while it used a Minimoog style filter from Moog was built with Osc, envelope and VCA chips from CEM like the Prophet 5 Rev3 and some of the Oberheim polysynths (e.g. OB-Xa, OB-8). CEm chips used i nMemorymoog seem to be CEM3340 (VCO), CEM3360 (Dual VCA), CEM3310 (EG).

Besides all that a proper Memorymoog emulation with the sound quality of e.g. Synapse Audio The Legend or U-He Repro-5 would be really awesome indeed.

In U-He Diva you might get somehow close with combining modules of the Minimoog and Roland Jupiter 8.
An option is also to use the effects plugin of The Legend with another synth like e.g. U-He Repro-5.

Maybe similar, but... the same? People already say the Minimoog reissue sounds different to the original. I think the Sub Phatty also sounds quite different.

I think the question should be made the other way: Why a Moog Source VSTi? Why would someone invest time, money and resources in making it?

I can easily think of 10 or more old synths that would bring more to the table, and still have no emulation. Not to talk about really original instruments.

They said support, testing etc. is a lot more complicated outside of iOS.
They have no resorces to do plug-ins yet.

I don't think there would be sufficient interest - the Source was a bit of a disappointement at the time and I think most people felt it wasn't as good as the Mini.

Main diffeernes of Source to a Minimoog seemed to be those:

- Only 2 Oscs instead of 3 in the Mini
- Osc Sync (not included in Minimoog Model D)
- dedicated LFO (not included in Minimoog Model D)
- 2 full ADSR enveleops (Mini had 2 ADS or 2 ADSD envelopes if Release = Decay time)
- Soure seemed to include an Arpeggiator, the Mini not

Besides that the Source seemd to be the fisrt Moo gsynt hwith patch storage.

Never owned a Souce (while i had both a Minimoog Model D and a Slim Phatty rack) but the major issue might have been the interface of the Source which was a lot of buttosn and a single data entry knob.

Overall the feature set of the Source seemed to be close to the Little Phattys (or Slim Phatty which was the rack). Those also had a bunch of buttons and only one knob per section like Oscs, filter and envelopes.
The display of the Phattys was helpful too to adjust the parameters.

For the Little Phattys theer is Xhun Audio LitleOne as an emulation and for Minimoog The Legend seems to be the best IMO. With the Mini in Diva you could get some of teh advanced featuers like e.g. Sync, ADSR enveleops (with the Jupiter 8 envelope module) and dedicated LFOs and of course Diva has a great a sound quality too.
