I am in need for some feedback on a re-worked edition of one of my earlier compositions.

I would also like to know if the intro with solo viola and violin is appropriate.

Yes!

Overall this all works very well in creating that old World heroic atmosphere.

I've listened to a few of your other tracks as well...I enjoyed all of them, but they all still lack a little variation / attention to detail in terms of orchestration and texture. you use strings quite well, but your brass and woodwind writing needs more attention? Consider some tuned percussion as well...seriously useful to lighten the mood / add a bit of glitter.

You might find this article helps as it is quite clearly laid out with audio example, (Prof Belkin knows his stuff - believe me):

This pdf of his might also be interesting and useful:

Another occasional minor issue with your pieces is the harmonic rhythm - the speed at which the underlying chords change. There is variation, but possibly not enough...

It would be quite typical for the rate of harmonic change to increase significantly towards the ends of phrases for example, to increase the intensity:

A typical 8 bar phrase might be:
4 beat chord / 4 beat chord / 4 beat chord / 2 beat chord x2 /
4 beat chord / 4 beat chord /2 beat chord x2 / 1 beat chord x 4 /

In actual example chords:
Am - - - / Am - - - / Am - - - / F - E7 - /
Am - - - / Am - - - / C - G - / F Dm Bm-5 E7 /

Nice piece of music and overall well orchestrated. For me, it does lack a bit of variation but it does portray the old world heroic scene well.

Useful explanation from ChamMusic, think I will check those links out myself :)
