Thanks very much for listening and commenting, jan. Glad you liked it :)

It's a VERY long time since I listened to Tomita, although I can't really imagine why that should be. I just fired up some of those Debussy pieces. The Rapture preset is definitely reminiscent of some of those Tomita sounds. Rolling back the years

htcnext2 wrote:Not bad if you get a decent sound out of that Aalto synth. I tried my best several times and just couldn´t get a clou... Besides that, the track is really nice. The atmosphere builds up fine and the sounds you use are top notch. I often get bored by ambient tracks but this one caught my attention. The space saw is cool. Well done!

Aalto is the bass on here. It's one of the factory presets with a tiny mod. A lot of synth patches can sound underwhelming when played solo, but when used in combination with the right accompaniment, they can come to life.

Thanks very much for taking the time to listen and comment, htcnext2. Glad you liked it :)

The lead is gorgeous. The white noise is soothing.
Hope you are able to get more time to make some more fabulous music!
Well done!
:)
Thanks very much for taking the time to listen and comment, John. Glad you enjoyed it :)

The lead is Arturia's ARP2600V2, and the swept vocal patch is coming from Rapture.

Time seems to be in short supply this year (again).

Glad you enjoyed it, vurt. Thanks very much for commenting :)

"almost drifted away" - if I make 'em longer, that should do the trick.

This is what it should sound like!

Loved it!

The individual sounds are exquisite at times, but more importantly, you have carefully and seamlessly sewn them all together into something magical.
Thanks very much for listening and for the great comments, Mark. Glad you liked it :D

I suppose this isn't really ambient music in its purest/purist definition. The sounds used probably fit the bill, but I can't seem to resist the sing-along factor

I'm not sure if the bass is too resonant but I think it could be a touch louder. Also the lead could be a little further back in the mix in places - I would use compression for this.
Thanks very much for the comments, and for listening, Unaspected. I hope you enjoyed it :)

I'll probably take another look at the bass this weekend. The original track posted on SoundCloud featured a boost in the lows during the mastering based on my failure to review the mastering on my normal setup. I corrected that, but it may be that I could increase the volume in the mix.

I'll take a look at the lead too, but I'll let you in on a little compression secret first. I never use it in the mix :o (I actually used it once, but the jury is still out).

There's an updated mix on SoundCloud now. The bass level has been increased a little in the mix, and I used the T-Racks Opto Compressor to tame the lead synth a little. The mastering settings are unchanged. The differences are subtle, but noticeable.

donkey tugger wrote:That's really good again. I think I said before, what sets stuff I've heard from you apart from a lot of sinthesiser music I hear is that there's obviously a plan and a musical intent behind it, rather than some wacky knob twiddling with no real progression of melody/structure etc. Mix sounds good to me too, nice and full with none of the piercing saw (as I believe such things are known) sounds you sometimes get. Still needs more jangle mind.. :hihi:

Nice one.
Thanks very much for listening, and for the kind words, dt. Glad you liked it :)

I decided to made this track for the latest AO compilation about 10 days before the submission deadline. My only plan was to make an "ambient" style track. I found that Rapture patch (used in the intro), and within minutes the basic form of the piece was settled. I spent about 3 or 4 more hours trialling sounds for the bass, pad, and lead over the next couple of days, and the track was finished a week ahead of schedule. I'm more comfortable using a melodic and structured approach to this stuff, but occasionally I let the dogs out. The second track I submitted is more dissonant with no redeeming melodic features whatsoever.

I don't fancy my chances, trying to sneak a Rickenbacker 660/12 past the missus

Listening on headphones, Sony MDR CD 480, best 50p I've every spent :)

Opening, resonance is very high, a bit too much and was noticeable throughput , a soft hiss of white noise would be appreciated by my ears, the drum/bass type delay adds a nice rhythmic flow and the ethereal pad floats very nicely although at times it seems to slightly bend in upon itself causing almost a self osculating effect, as the drift pad comes in, it gathers the space nicely, almost like an early morning mist, the things that holds the most charm is the theraminesque sound, like the song of a flying skybound whale :D
