I quite like the one from Vengeance Sound. It is included as part of their Essential FX Bundle 2.
* Trancegate (yes, our famous Trancegate FX from Phalanx!)
It is easy to use and pretty powerful. Lots of other cool stuff in the bundle, too .. if you can get over the eLicenser requirement.

Then there is the old school approach of creating a rhythm track and sidechain isn’t it to a noisegate on the synth track. As the rhythm triggers the gate it lets the synth through. Sometimes this is the best method of you have a really complex rhythm, or a rhythm that changes a lot, or you just want more control over the attack and release characteristics.
Wow I have always done it using this method. This thread is really opening my eyes to all the alternatives out there.

Actually, Unfiltered Audio’s Zip should be able to produce something to this effect.

That thing looks awesome. Such a shame they don't offer the plugins in the suite as single products.

LFOtool?

Still using the free Stormgate1 http://www.araldfx.com/sg1/ . Tried a couple of months ago some new amplitude modulation plug-in's like LFO Tool and VolumeShaper, but they produce too much artifacts without the "smooth" function. For me Stormgate1 is still the best. Only this 32 bit plug-in doesn't load the preset names properly in my 64 bit Cubase Artist 7.5. The Cubase .vstpreset format works fine however. Stormgate1 also had some syncing issues with some hosts. The developer suggested to trigger the patterns via midi notes.

I made a lot of presets for this plug-in: https://rekkerd.org/peter-den-herder-re ... tormgate1/ and https://rekkerd.org/peter-den-herder-re ... tormgate1/

Unfortunately the bundles have bugs (like the Trancegate has small timing issues especially when working in looped playback) and don't get attention from the devs anymore :( There were feature updates promised too but nothing happened.

Woa..
Also, they should have the option to set-up and play different patterns with keyboard/CC.

(pssst, i bought IM Polyverse Gatekeeper.. it's really nice)
------
The Level-fx in Reaktor Molekular has patterns for Gate/Pan/Pulswidth (of gate).
(1 samples latency in paral. with "Limiter" off)
Can chain/parallel process up to 4 Level-fx..

It’s now known as Step-FX within Logic

After some back and forth, i'm landed with A1TriggerGate again. Simply the best featured for me. VolumeShaper is cool, but, there's some stuff it simply can't do, like setting single steps, short, medium and long, or adjusting the gate time on the fly, or, adjusting the envelope for all steps. Rather has its uses for sidechain style pumping effects, than for trance gate fx, at least when you need some more advanced functions. There's some stuff in A1TriggerGate that i don't need as well (like the filter, and drive stuff), but, hey, nothing is perfect.

Tantra is great as well, just tried it, after a long time of not having used it. I remember it took quite a bit of CPU when activating the effects, but, for pure trance gate uses, it is great actually. Has everything i got to have, and even allows for several different patterns, and pan effects. Actually, i think this will be the one i use from now on.

Gate -> Sidechain -> Hi-hat track

Old school is the best school.
