on top right(pic1) of the dx7 this should be the hardware programmer for the superJX..hmm

Well, I can only identify the second on from top, which I believe is a Roland JX-8P.

top keyboard isn't a DX7... it's way too big to be a DX7, the JX8P is a huge f**king synth for it's 61 keys. it looks a lot more like the DX5, definitely the PG-800 programmer for the JX sitting on the top synth, though.

EDIT: completely forgot... there's a patch on the Yamaha CS2X called "Europe". it's the sound from the final countdown. there's also a patch on there called "jump", imagine what that is

they said the Yamaha KX-76.

that would make sense, since the PG800 programmer for the JX is on the Yamaha KX-76..

Old thread, I know, but just to confirm what has been said already (but with a twist): Michaeli did indeed use a JX-8P for the riff, but layered with a preset from a TX-816 module. So having a DX synth on stage together with the JX would have made sense.

(The KX-76 is most likely controlling a hidden TX module somewhere, together with the JX.)

Sidenote: ages ago, I was offered to buy that particular JX-8P used on the album, but declined since analogue synths seemed so old and outdated by then..!

MPc: First things first – every keyboard player, even today, wants to know what synths were used to create the famous lead sound from “The Final Countdown.”

Mic: It was a Yamaha rack thing, the TX-816, it was basically eight DX-7s in a module, together with a Roland JX-8P. I made a brassy sound from the JX-8 and used a factory sound from the Yamaha, and just layered them together. It’s a very special sound. I haven’t been able to create it on any other synth since then, so now when I play it live, I just sampled that sound and use that as the “Final Countdown” sound.

JX-8P preset "STAB BRASS", with VCA Dynamics and VCF Dynamics set to "OFF", and VCF Frequency set to 99.

The brass lead is created on a JX8P and edited on a TX-816 rack unit. The preset is “Stab Brass”. For the pad, I’m unsure what synth it is created on but probably either a JX8P or PPG Wave Unit. For the bells, I’d say either a JX10 or PPG Wave Unit. For the effect and techno bass, I have no idea what synth or how he created it. I hope this helps.
