Audio Nebula will be giving away 3 copies of their Aurora FM Win VST to KVR members.

Entering to win is easy. All you have to do is post in this thread with a short post that contains some interesting FM synthesis-related content. Some examples are:
  • A song that you've composed that incorporates FM synthesis.
  • A cool video pertaining to FM synthesis.
  • A story or anecdote from your life about FM synths or synthesis, like the first time you heard a game with an Ad Lib sound card, FM video game music that's had an impact on you, the time your drunk buddy spilled a beer on your brand new DX7 !, etc.
  • A great synth joke that most people probably haven't heard (it's gotta be a good one).
  • Anything else that's relevant, as long as it's interesting, funny, tragic, or relatable.
The winners will be announced on June 1st, 2018. Audio Nebula will randomly pick 3 winners from among all of the qualifying posts.

Start sharing your FM synthesis content and let's have some fun!

Hi, joining with the demotape (literally) of Yamaha DX7/DX9 when released in 1983.
Probably already known by the most, anyway, here it is :)

Thanks for kicking things off, Diego_C. Wonderfully cheesy for today, but must've seemed like magic back in '83...

Page 74 from John Chowning's " FM Theory and Applications — For Musicians By Musicians". This is the more accessible description of FM from its creator, published in 1986. Chowning discovered the algorithm in 1967 and introduced it to the world in a 1973 paper.

I'll post an anecdote:

FM synthesis is the synthesis method that you might have found the most difficult to understand, but it'll do the sounds you did before FM and new ones as well.

Aurora FM costs only $17 CAD (Introductory pricing). I already purchased it, so I'm not entering this competition. One of the things I really like about it is when I load an old DX7 syx Bank and a menu of the presets is immediately displayed and playable without having to do any manual format conversion.

It comes in 32-bit x86 (good for me) and 64-bit x64 (good for others).

''Much more than a mere DX7 emulation - Aurora FM translates Yamaha DX7/6-op patches but is a superior, semi-modular, flexible, highly-usable modern instrument for musicians and synthesists''
Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

A song that I have made completely of, using Bruce Sutherland's "JUCEOPLVSTi" (an FM Synthesizer VST based on late 80s/early 90s Yamaha OPL chipset)

Nice tune! Thanks for sharing.

Here's a link to a little sketch of mine that features a heavy dose of FM synthesis blended with a variety of other elements (drums, bass, guitar, and even an analog style synth if you can find it).
This an unfinished sketch that's intended to be part of a larger work at some point. The idea here is to both contrast the sharper digital tones with the softer acoustic and electro acoustic tones, but at the same time showcase how "organic" FM synthesis can sound in the right circumstance.
Sorry if the volume is a bit low. As I said this is just a brief sketch so there is no polish on it.
