Well there's ~55 Expansions now and only around 20 of them slated for K12U (in the leaked metadata, at least).

I feel the expansions included with Komplete are a taste to get users interested in the new libraries.

Some of NI's customers simply sit on their hands buying new NI products until the next Komplete comes out. I think they've partly addressed that problem (of no income from certain customers between Komplete releases) by making Komplete an every-two-years update instead of an annual release, making it harder to sit on your hands while NI releases cool individual products (I broke down and bought Una Corda and a couple of the Session Guitars packs out-of-cycle because I had immediate needs for them, for example). But Expansions are probably another play, as they come out rather frequently, and until now were mostly only of use to Maschine users.

I'm actually a little surprised they're including so many expansions in these Komplete releases (again, that could change within the next few months), because I bet Expansions will be lucrative. EDIT: I like them quite a bit- they've finally given me a reason to use Battery 4. (Still use Battery 3 when making my own kits though!)

...and now Middle East is out. Just leaves Kontakt 6 and Massive X from the leaked list, AFAIK.

because they didn't give you Absynth 6? good riddance.

why do all the crybabies buy NI stuff?
So the only NI product you are even remotely interested in is Absynth? Then surely what was the point of even getting Komplete. It’s cheaper to get Absynth standalone.

In the past they have often released major new products at the same time as the new komplete. I remember it happening way back with a new absynth and kontakt. And recently wth the new pianos and some other Reaktor instruments. So my guess is that both kontakt 6 and Massive X come out at the same time as Komplete 12. Or possibly Massive X first. But definitely kontakt 6 and komplete at the same time.

I've had a few Kompletes now but am thinking of just keeping Kontakt (upgrading from an old license) and selling Komplete. WIll depend on what is on offer and the money, but I more or less never use anything other than Kontakt nowdays. There is such a complex interlocking of products now though that I will definitely need NI advice when k12 is finally released

True, but my pet theory is that Kontakt 6 won't be ready in time, and it will be just available for free download on eventual release for K12 users. So my guess is Massive X on Komplete release, the big Kontakt 6 announcement, but only the former actually available.

EvilDragon has stated elsewhere that Kontakt 6 is not even in beta stage yet, he hasn't made any comments about Massive X (NDA??).

A major Kontakt update is going to require a lot of compatibility testing, there are many other companies and high level professional musicians that rely on the Kontakt architecture so it's important that v6 functions fully and without issues before v5 can be replaced. In contrast Massive X appears to be a seperate entity to Massive (Classic) so it's probably going to be in a releasable state much sooner.

Regardless of this leak, i'd be suprised if Kontakt 6 will be a part of K12 at all (even delayed), unless they plan on releasing a standard and pro version of it.

Indeed - the fact it isn't (or wasn't) yet in Beta in June is exactly what makes me think it will get a delayed release. Gaps between Komplete versions have never been longer than 2 years, which is up in September I believe. Cash flow etc etc - I don't think NI will want to hang around any longer than this. Simple solution - release Komplete 12 in September and just release Kontakt 6 when its ready. My guess is that by then it will have made it into Beta, so they can show some demo videos etc when Komplete 12 gets released.

IIRC the word was that Kontakt 6 was to be released with K11.

Will Kontakt 6 will be more like Falcon?

That was conjecture, though I believe it did get as far as an Alpha version back then and it was - again IIRC - junked. It's not impossible that the same thing happens again now, but clearly since its in the leak (which has been 100% accurate thus far) it is very much NI's intention to put it into Komplete 12, and there was no equivalent leak for Komplete 11.

As to what's actually in it - who knows.

Remember that in this ominous leak Kontakt was listed with a 6 in brackets. So they do not know which version will be in K12. If (big IF) Massive X (remember the questionmarks in that list!) will come this year and if (bigger IF) K12 will come this year, then the biggest IF is touched to Kontakt 6 popping up this year.

Post

Good points Martin so yeah wriggle room on both. After this, it would be very disappointing if Komplete 12 were just the rest of the stuff - nice to haves there but just.... nice to have.

I would definitely not upgrade if it were just what was released so far. But I think that is extremely unlikely given that they usually release the last products at the same time as komplete.

I usually upgrade every two versions but if Massive x is a worthy successor to Massive and kontakt 6 is a decent update then there’s a good chance I might actually go to 12U from my current 11U.

So while we're speculating, companies generally don't like releasing version 13 of anything because people are idiots/superstitious. So what next after K12? Straight to 14 or perhaps a rebrand?

Yes, these superstitious so called adults...
