Its just a code that you can elect to "use" at any time so I don't see why not.

inside their webshop it´s clear that the upgrade plan covers upgrades from version 1 and 2..

so you might be able to buy at discount prices to upgrade untill 2.9 or similar, but i would consider that they could switch early to version 3.0 so you might not be able to use the bought upgrade plan...

but maybe just mail their support
