Ableton Live controller mapping - variable assignment

I saw a picture a week back of a controller that had been mapped to Ableton Live and one of the volume faders was assigned to the currently selected track. For the life of me I can't find this picture and therefore article again, hence my question.

Currently I have my Korg NanoKontrol mapped as following:
Faders 1 to 7 - Channels 1 to 7
Fader 8 - Master output

Ideally I would like fader 1 to always default to the individually selected track instead of being hardmapped. Is this possible in Live? It must be given the pic I saw...

TL;DR: How do I map my controller to the selected track?

This might help?

You can create scripts in Live to automap controllers to particular params - works for macros but maybe it can also work for other stuff?

That looks quite promising. Will give it a shot at the weekend :tu:

How's that going to work ? Without motorized faders all the tracks would end up with the same fader setting as you click through them .. ? Seems like you'd have to use infinite rotary knobs with indicators unless I misunderstand.

This isn't for playing live, merely for working on the go in a hotel room/coffee shop, etc. Therefore not fussed at all if I have to occassionally adjust the level.

Typically we work on the same MIDI/Audio track for quite a long time anyway so there's little need to be constantly adjusting.

Mushy, I bet you'd like Midi Fighter Twister for this kind of thing, has rotary indicators that accept feedback, also built strong, programmable CC's. $$$$$$

Hi Mr Low,

Thanks for the suggestion. I just had a quick look at that and while it's quite a nice product it doesn't have faders which are critical for my application. The NanoKontrol is absolutely perfect because it's super light and very cheap so I take it everywhere without too much fear of breakage. This and my Surface go everywhere with me in case I suddenly feel inspired.

It's really the perfect form factor with 8 volume faders, 8 assignable synth/automation knobs and transport control in a 1cm high package.

I've been tempted by that surface too ... the ONLY thing I don't like about it is that it has such a small USB connector on it. If any of Korg's engineers are reading this, bigger connector would be a lot harder to damage and/or pull loose.

Yeah that is a concern but it has held up quite well after a couple years, many continents and lots of countries, hotel rooms, etc. I do look after my gear though so you should be fine. For the price it's really a no brainer.

There is a control script for the selected track:

There is also nativekontrol.com stuff if you want to go deeper with scripts

Not exactly what the 1st post asks, but pretty nice:

After unzipping the "NanoKontrol2ShiftAL9.1" folder has to be renamed to just "NanoKontrol2Shift" and added to "ProgramData\Ableton\Live 10\Resources\MIDI Remote Scripts" (may not be exactly that, but probably close, don't know the Mac path)

Also have a look here https://remotify.io/

Makes the job very easy once you've coughed up the bucks

Thanks guys. Lots to consider and much more than I was expecting.

This one looks superb /remotify.io/ It is rather expensive though  However for a coding numpty like myself it could be the ticket.
