Latest News: u-he updates all their plug-ins

Hi --
I was trying to replicate the some of the 'Synth' style settings in FabFilter Volcano - such as the various 'Reflections' patches. Before I went any further, I just wondered if anyone had done this already? -- chris |

Sorry Urs .. what I meant was .. I have filterscape, but I want to replicate that one sort of patch from volcano Also I have a song that uses lots of those sorts of patches, and it would be good to use one filter throughout |

Oh... hehehe... okay!
Well, the one thing that makes Volcano pretty unique is its overdrive/distortion sound. Filterscape on the other hand is meant to have a neutral character, because I'm convinced that this has a wider range of musical use in general. I'd go as far as to say that while most filter plugins are meant to add *character* to the sound, Filterscape is meant to be your swiss army knife for all kinds of modulation (i.e. hardly anyone mentions the multiband panning possibilities of the SVF filters or the weird multiband compression style possibilities of the EQ). In that context I doubt that it'll be easy to emulate those other new plugins like Volcano or Frantic, unless you add some sort of overdrive or tube saturation plugin, just like you can't emulate Filterscape's flexibility in these. However, if we talk about the sheer character of the filter's influence on the sonic spectrum, this should be emulatable in a relatively easy manner. For instance, some lowpass filters boost the bass at low cutoff frequencies to simulate that "analog pressure". What I do in this respect is setting up two or three EQ snapshots that I morph or modulate in parallel with the cuoff frequency of the filter. In the setting for low cutoff I'd have the yellow ball heading towards the top left corner of the EQ control. An example that comes to my mind is the "All Phat LP II" preset for FilterscapeVA which has got that deep belly. You can directly transfer this to Filterscape, as VA's LP II is identical to Filterscape's SVF in all Lowpass setting. However, Filterscape came out months before Volcano and Frantic. I didn't expect so much interest in colourizing filters for effects (in opposition to synths, where colourizing filters are a must). I guess the next update to Filterscape will do something in that respect Cheers, |

Okay, i'm guessing therefore that Filterscape is most like the 'smooth' filter setting in Volcano .. so I should be able to use it to emulate settings that only use those types of filters (like the Reflections) - i'll have a crack at this using the techniques you outline. Quote: You can directly transfer this to Filterscape, as VA's LP II is identical to Filterscape's SVF in all Lowpass setting. Hrm .. thats an interesting plan - i'll try and transfer some of the VA settings over. This should be apt as I'm really trying to get 'padlike' sounds from a processed guitar/bass .. mainly as a way of quickly 'filling out' what I'm recording. I didn't expect so much interest in colourizing filters for effects (in opposition to synths, where colourizing filters are a must). I come from this originally from using the Roger Linn "Adrenalinn" .. which is cool, but fairly difficult to program. He has the distortion/colorizing function split out - but that's a guitar product so it makes sense in that context. Actually, the one thing I really like in Filterscape so far is the ability to effectively modulate by rhythm - though it's not so easy to set the various sliders back to the default position. I got Volcano first and then tried and bought Filterscape after seeing it recommended as an alternative in one of the music mags here. (Well, the 12/24/36 dB LP in FilterscapeVA has quite some colour Later, |
