SCRAPtopia is in production.

It will have a multi gigabyte library of percussive sounds of all types and variety - every type of metal imagineable will be hit, pulverized, torn apart and made into SCRAP! From sheets of metal to steel barrels, from active machines to old cars - nothing is out of bounds to our tools of destruction - and 24 bit, 48khz records and stereo microphones!

Ask any questions about SCRAPtopia here.

We will post more about it soon.

I'm very excited about this Mike, especially if it covers the range that I'm expecting.

Just a coulpe of suggestions:

If you're going to process the samples, I would suggest that you also provide the DRY original samples, that way the users can manipulate the samples themselves and even share the resulting patches with all hardcoreharmonics customers.

If there's a possibility, you should make the hits multisampled, that way they would sound more organic.

And PLEASE be sure to bang the CRAP out of every metal, glass, weird thing that you can found Very Happy

I envy you guys, the recording process seems like fun, I'm gonna try myself sometime HiHi

Venomeza,

Good suggestions. Actually, almost all our samples ARE dry and effected in the synth. If they sound wet, that is the synth's effects.

Trust me, we have and will bang the crap out of everything.

This sounds very cool. I have a special request- is there any chance of making special presets that work with Roland Handsonic controllers (predone so that is plug and play). Something like this would be a very cool addition. I know you can do it manually but it would be cool to have some architected setups to bang on (and that skillfully use the extra CC controls the Handsonics put out for positional sounds like rimshots or mutes).

JavaJ,

I would have to have one of those to set it up. However, we do have an Alesis drum pad and can set up some presets and soundsets to work with that - perhaps they are compatible?

I'll do some research.

Yeah, SCRAPtopia has been a really amazing experience so far. We've done some stuff most people would not do - or know to do - to make sounds from things that should not normally make sounds (no gerbils were hurt in this production)!

We'll get out the demos when we are done.

Wouldn't DRILLZ and SCRAPtopia kind of contain the same sort of things to a degree?

Vespers,

Nope.

SCRAPtopia is 3D sampling of us hitting metallic, glass, crystalline, plastic, rubber and other objects that DO NOT MOVE or MAKE NOISE by themselves.

DRILLZ is 3D sampling of machines, motors, rotors, reactors, instrumentation, BIG industrial machinery, earth movers, cranes, etc - all that make noise on their own. Then we will make that into both percussive and chromatic (playable) instruments.

Example: So you'd be hitting sheet metal yourself in one, while a punch press would be driving a tool through the sheet metal on the other.

Vespers,

No. Think of STOMP! the percussion group - we're making a large percussive set out of all kinds of things at scrapyards, junkyards, steel barrels, large metal containers, etc - and hitting them with drum sticks, hammers, mallets, etc.

DRILLZ will involve huge industrial machinery - like newspaper printing presses, massive motors, hot rods, earth movers, electrical stations, water pumps and so on - but no metal presses that I know of.

Ah, ok then.

Wow, no punch presses eh? I'm around those things all day, and they are massive, forceful sounding machines. If I remember correctly, that is what was used for the sound effect of the footsteps of those large walkers in Star Wars.

Then we'll find one to sample for SCRAPtopia.

What do you do for a living or when you are around them?

Cool.

Me? I'm a CNC programmer for a sheet metal fabrication company.

Music and sound design I do in my spare time.
