Postby xh3rv; Sat Oct 24, 2009 2:00 pm ZPC #5: Dr. StrangeZebra, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the XMF

Official:

Patches must contain no more and no less than:

* 1 or 2 sound generating modules (Oscillators, Combs, FMOs, Noise)
* 1 XMF module

* These may be arranged in any way, some examples:

[Channel 1: Osc -> Osc -> XMF ]
[Channel 1: Osc -> XMF ] [ Channel 2: Osc ]
[Channel 1: Osc -> XMF ] [ Channel 2: Noise (feeds XMF Sidechain) ]

* The relationship between two sound generators in this patch structure can vary widely, but a few examples might be: Bass plus subbier bass, layering by octaves or 5ths (or other intervals), sound plus noise

Other guidelines:

* Urs's YouTube demonstration of the v2.5 XMF explains what's new with the XMF!

* Up to 3 modules in the FX grid

* One XY control

* Submitting patches:

-- Please submit patches to me. I will archive them and pass them to Bmrzycki, who will host them as he has for previous competitions. Please feel free to submit whenever, re-submit, or anything else in that process so long as it's done before the end of the contest. Any individual may submit up to 2 patches.

Feel free to PM or e-mail me via these forums or directly at: Image

-- Submitted patches will be posted November 16, so they should be submitted by the preceding day. I'll post exactly 24 hours before the submission deadline to make sure that timing is clear. Good luck and have fun!

You should make it a rule. No more than 3 FX modules. Draw the line there.
So if someone uses 5 or 6 they will have done nothing wrong without it being set in stone.

The several entries and different categories is overkill.
Keeping things simple works best. Not to mention the time involved in creating those extra patches, and the extra voting required for that.
Some sounds are great, even when they don't fit into a category.

Agreed, the multiple categories thing just popped into my head and I didn't think it through - it's not very simple. Likewise, a limit on number of FX is a bright line.

i agree with a limit on effects also (3 is enough i think)
one question: no limits on LFOs, EGs, MSEGs, and so on...?

I agree with MC about the FX use and generally keeping everything clearly defined and simple. For that reason I wouldn't complicate things any further with limits on mod sources (and don't limit XY use on my account - I know I made a fuss about it, but I got the feeling that my view wasn't very widely held).

Only 2 weeks? I thought we had longer in the previous couple of comps.

On the other hand, carefully programming XY pads clearly hasn't done me much good... :-/

We can do three weeks, I just put down two forgetting that it changed to three weeks.

No limits :) If anything, there should be some more opportunities for interesting modulations with an overall more dynamic XMF in v2.5.

I think 1 XY should be fine for this contest, I do think some other contest themes have or would justify more XYs. Since no one objected here, I hope that's a sign that whichever way isn't making or braking anyone's patching mojo. There's so much creative headroom in Zebra I'm sure it won't make the challenge too easy or limited.

Question: Do all sound generating devices need to flow through XMF? Or can we have something like:
Code: Select all
[ OSC1 ][ FMO1 ]
[ XMF1 ][  |   ]
[  |   ][  |   ]
...
[   FX GRID    ]
To me that's a useful setup when adding small amounts of noise/grit/metallic-combness to a preset. It it allowed?
