Older post info: Here's a sneak peek at Rez 3. It is still in development, but the end result should look pretty close to this. Edit: Want me to release Rez in a different color? Vote here!
It's not in the beta testing or sound design phases yet as I am still working on the structure and tweaking features, but I am currently aiming to have to ready for release in some month in the not-too-distant future. Still free...mostly... I really enjoy giving away stuff, but I'm also not always in the greatest of financial positions and the sale of my commercial stuff really does help pay some of the bills. So I'm going to try for a compromise with Rez 3... The synth will be free, but it will come with a reduced number of presets - and I will launch with one or two commercial (but quite inexpensive) banks of presets. So that way the synth can stay free, but add-ons for it might be able to provide me with some income. If this model does well, I may consider it for future releases too. But first, I figured I'd give it a shot with Rez and see how it goes. MP3 Demos Rez3-beta-demo.mp3 (May 21, 2010) Rez3-beta-demo-2.mp3 (Sep 08, 2010) Current Status: as of January 5th, 2011 It's coming along well, but I'm still beta testing/tweaking the and I've got two banks left to create. New stuff in v3: (features subject to change) • Updated sound - can be brighter and more aggressive than before, and capable of sounds earlier versions couldn't do • 16 step programmable arpeggiator with dedicated arp sequencers for gate length, cutoff, portamento, and phaser frequency, and the sequencer direction follows the arp direction • Cutoff offset control, which reduces the cutoff of one of the internal filters relative to the other to provide chewier, more vocal sounds when at high resonance • More arpeggiator playback options • More aggressive distortion with three tone modes • Lo-Fi mode simultaneously adjusts the bit-rate and downsampling of two chained bit-crusher modules • Velocity support for the amp envelope • Pitch bend range adjustment • MIDI learn • Sub oscillator octave adjustment • Easier to see/use GUI (with two variations) • Delays now go up to 1/128 • Added delay modulation • Age control - think increasingly unstable/noisy/broken oscillators, rather than the subtle drift of an old analog. • Phase reset - when activated, the phase will snap back into alignment when the age and detune sliders both hit zero. • Improved/expanded oscillator phase modulation - in addition to the previous ability for the oscillator phase slider and LFO to control the phase and pulse width of the main oscillator (actually, there are multiple oscillators in there) there is now a second stage to this which adjusts/modulates how much the output of the main oscillator can modulate the phase of the sub oscillator. Both stages have their own level controls and the LFO can modulate either or both. Bug fixes: • Multiple instances can now run on multicore processors without requiring duplicates of the dll. Other changes: • Randomizer removed (it was an Easter egg in Rez 2) • The synth will remain free but this time it will only come with a small selection of demo presets, because I will have three banks of commercial presets available for it. Have you settled on the yellow/black combination or are you still playing with colors? |

Pleeeease!!! Is there still no SynthEdit type of program for Macs ? If there is, someone should tell the world, and Ugo, although I'm not sure if he has a Mac these days, but if he does he might be interested in doing something for Mac users. I can't speak for him of course, just saying, if there was an SE for Macs, then it might happen someday. |

I rather dig the yellow/black combo so this will probably be the look. I always seem to lean toward more colorful interfaces with Rez. (In contrast to something like M-theory or the Ironhead plugs.) Perimeter Sound wrote: pascual wrote: I'd pay big bucks for Mac version!

Unfortunately I'm still not able to produce Mac versions. This will be another SE build (using the latest SE, so no more multi-core issues) so until either SE supports Mac, someone makes something like SE that can support Mac, or I finally can afford to hire coders, I'm stuck just releases stuff for Windows. |

I started thinking about that some more... maybe I'll experiment with two GUIs - one with the current combo and one with a more 'easy going' color scheme (grays, etc.) |

this is wonderful news. i really loved using rez2 for psy trance sounds, but since i got a 2 core cpu i use it extremely rarely. is it possible to recompile rez 2 with multicore support?
also, i do not see the definition of lfo in the gui. and, whatever you do to it, please do not change the basic sound too much. that made the synth pretty unique. maybe add 2 or 4 times oversampling, ok |

No, I am afraid not. The new SE created conflicts with v2 so I had to rebuild various aspects of it - including the whole GUI, using different types of controls. As a result, v3 will not be preset compatible with v2. The good news is that v3 gains new features, various improvements, bug fixes, and I find the new GUI easier to use. LFO is there - the LFO slider controls the level and the waveform and speed adjustments next to it control the other aspects. Also, unfortunately, I have no control over the oversampling since I'm using SE. The sound is definitely different. Sorry about that, but some of the upgrades I wanted to make required that, and others were forced by changes in SE. (Modules that didn't seem to work well anymore.) The new tone is more vibrant, clearer, more high quality, and more aggressive. I'm still tweaking it, but I may post some mp3s up before too long. |

great to see that you're working on a new version of rez. I personally like the yellow gui, but a second one with more moderate colours would a good idea for other users imho. btw. maybe I can do some patches for it You've still got access to the beta forum, so I'd be happy to have you on board as a beta tester again. |
